Hi guys, I am in the market to buy a new truck. Found a nice one that I am interested in. I am looking at a 2003 Chevy 1500HD. I have never owned an HD before. I was wondering if anyone has this truck model and what they get for gas mileage? City, HWY, and Pulling a boat? Any info would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

If memory serves me correct, the HD was a 6.0 motor and 4.10 gears… 12 14mph at best empty.towing depends on size of boat, but minimal loss of mph.

    The 5.3 motor 16 – 18 mph empty,12-14 towing.

I have a 2003 Silverado ss, it has the high performance version of the 6.0L and 4.10 gears. I tow a 16 1/2 foot boat. I get around 16 mpg empty and an average of 13.5 mpg with the boat. I have got as much as 20 mpg empty, it all depends how you drive.

Is yours 4wd? Mine never got close to what yours is,but I do agree on the how you drive part.

Average 12-14… Highway trips driving 60 have got 18mpg. Interstate driving typically 14mpg. Doesn’t drop much when pulling. So far so good for me with my 6.0 – no shortage on power either……

Dean mine is actually all wheel drive. It is great for winter and slippery boat ramps.

I have the 1500HD, best I’ve had is 14.6, average around 12.5. 10-11 pulling my 17’5″ polarKraft. Mine is 4WD model.

Thanks guys. I was hoping to see a little bit higher number for any highway travel so maybe I will hold off on the HD. Thanks

The 6.0 is not known for any type of good gas milage, maybe 14 on the highway. I opted for the 8.1 with the Allison transmission and 3.73 and get 16 empty highway. If you don’t need the GVWR, get the 1/2 ton with the 5.3 instead.
