I need (am anxious) to get my Grandson his 1st Rod-Reel.
(I will not buy a toy, Snoopy, Batman pole, etc.)

Thinkin like a short Ulgy Stick w/Spincast reel. (My thinkin is some to last him a few years and in-destructable).

    Any other good combo’s?
Birthday is Aug 2, he’ll be 3yo. He is big for age at 3′-4″ but still not quite 3 yet.

I learned to fish on my grandparents pond with a zebco 33 classic.

I did the same thing with my son, bought him a spinning combo right off the bat. He is 9 now and could hit a pie plate at 20-30 yards. Kudos to you for not buying into the novelty kids toy rods, he’ll be better off for it.

Just remember ~ The longer the pole the more difficult it is for a youngster to handle. The attention span of most 3 year olds, as I’m sure you are aware, is about this “-” long. The last thing you want to do is shorten that span even more. The combo’s others have suggested are ideal for 8 & 9 year old beginners but not toddlers. Get a cartoon character pole for the future star. He’ll get more use off the water than he will on and with any luck develope an interest

I have two 5 year olds and went with some starter ones you say are toys. They have been in the water a few times already. The fact that they float is a plus. My suggestion is to go with that and tell him if he learns the concepts and does well with those they can get a big boy rod at Christmas. What do you intend to go after? If it is just gills anything works for that. Twins are harder though as you can only be standing by one of them. Get the 4 foot rods though the little short ones are junk.

When our son was less than three years old, we set him up with an ice fishing rod and reel combo. It was nice and short and easy for him to manage. Plus, he learned how to use an open-face reel right away. Now that he is older, we have “upgraded” to a 4ft. Guide Series rod from Gander Mountain with a Pflueger President reel (my husband plans to use this for panfish when Jake outgrows it). One last thing… DO NOT forget to put a rod float on (we got a 3 pack at Cabela’s for $9.99) because I can assure you- the rod and reel will take a trip or two into the drink!

Hard to go wrong with the Zebco 33. That is what I started the boy out on and it is still around somewhere today.
