I’m looking for a good agent that sells contractor’s liabilty insurance and possibly work comp. I need someone in the twin cities, preferably in the south metro. My current agent is feeding me a line of bulls**t right now.

    Anybody know a good agent???

    Thanks a million.

Try your local Federated agent. Its Mark Conrath in the north metro. Hopefully your guy down there is just as good. Cant believe it but I actually enjoy when my agent stops by.

    Hi John,

My agency specializes in all lines of insurance, and I have a thorough understanding of commercial insurance practices, such as general liability, work comp, etc.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

You gave me an opportunity to vent. Workmens comp just rubs me raw, so much that i have contacted my local legislature about it. I have been in business for 15 yrs , with the same guy’s. I pay about 8 grand a year because the state mandates it. If after 20 years and our buiseness has no claims, reward the business with it’s own money. Let’s say 75%. I was given a chuckle .
Long story short, you will pay alot. I have only 2 full time employee’s. I pay approximately 8 dollars per hundred on payroll, for w/c.

I am a one man show and I was thinking of bringing on a part time employee on certain jobs. After seeing the quote from the pool for workers comp. I don’t know how I would even afford it. It’s ridiculous!

I think there is a minimum amount for a work comp policy. Maybe Justin may know more about this. For me its not worth hiring someone temporary. Have you looked at hiring threw a labor agency. This is like hiring temp construction workers. Many of them include the work comp as they employee large groups of people. Not sure if this route would save you money or not.

Temp angency will cover the cost of work comp etc. it will save you for small times of need. the other option is to have independent guys come to help[ you need a w9 form and the need me be a LLC company through state. they would carry there own insurance policy. You need to get a proof of insurance for you records. they should also be working for a few people or the state will call them your employee anyway. work comp is costly but if you want to grow it is an expense that is needed. your rates will go down th elonger you have employees. Wally you sound like you are overpaying for work comp. I pay less and ahve been in business for 6 years landscaping a much higher rate due to back injuies. you should be around 6 or so.

The state “pool” is just one reason that small business has such a tough time in this state doing business.

I guess you could just do like thousands of others do nationwide and hire undocumented workers.

A temp agency would probably be the best route to go in your situation if you are just looking for a little help on occasions. I have alot of clients who take advantage of temp. agencies in this economy.

In regards to General Liability insurance, your premium will primarily be based on your Gross Sales and Gross Reciepts for most insurance companies.

cedar creek, be careful with those part-time employees you are saying are “contracted” those loop holes were once there are going away in a hurry. Here in IA the state is looking closely at all “contracted” labor, if there is any connection such as a employer/employee relationship (the smell test) they are an employee, and should be covered under work comp. I know this state is hurting for money so fines are being applied. I know MN is in a bigger pickle with their budget, can’t imagine they won’t be going through things with a finer comb.

Consider yourself extremely lucky to have such a cheap rate. Based on that rate I assume you do carpentry or darn near clerical duties. 8% is awesome.
Try 25-40% on 15-20 men. 40+ hours a week. Its worth it to me though.
