Sorry to hear that. I know your pain even though you’ll get to do some fishing. My pink slip date was 1/29/10 and I landed a new job mid April.
There are many people out there in your position and many more who have just been there….tons of great resources to help you get back on the job.
Don’t know what you do, but let me know if you’d like to hear some thoughts from someone who’s been through it.

I been laid off for 2 months now. Its no good when a Carpenter gets to sit in the summer time. And yesterday I made the mistake of fishing with out a shirt on during the morning. Think I am hitting the couch today. That was a dumb move!!

Hang in there and keep a positive attitude. It always seems like the quality job opportunities come along when you least expect it. I’m a custom estimator/designer for high end residential homes. I managed to ride the storm out until the end of February of this year. Been off since then and heard everything imaginable why companies can not hire. I’m realizing now what it truly means to be over-qualified and how much harder it is to find work.

Good luck in your future endeavors.

I was a union carpenter. got laid off march of ’09. I love the work but i am very upset at the union. I have 20 years in and they threatened to take away my pension if i didnt pay in my monthly fees.
while i know i dont have to pay anything because i dropped my card, i received lots of not so nice mail telling me i am letting the rest of my union brothers down by not sending in my dues.
last time i checked, i dont know another union brother who is working in SE WI. there is some work, however it’s the foreman and their little buddies.

I am going to work in a factory starting next week. I wont lose my health insurance every two months because there isn’t a lot of work. I wont have to find my own work when the job is over, and my pension plan will have more input from me as far as how much i want to put away!!!

No more union from this guy. keep hangin in there and put out tons of resume’s. I have been doing so for over a year and now the offers have been somewhat pouring in the last three weeks (sure-right when fishing is heating up–go figure!!)

As stated before don’t feel alone, Laid off 1/07/10. I have put out 118 resumes, have had 10 phone interviews,(3 of which were conducted while I was fishing) 4 on site interviews, 3 2nd time interviews, and 4 job fairs. Unemployment is close to running out. Started working part time for my wife. $10.00 an hour. (That was a hard thing for me to swallow) But it got me out of the house and feeling productive.
Landed a job today, and start next Tuesday. So there is hope!!! Was starting to think that a 50 yr old white male is not needed anymore in the workforce.
So I’m heere to tell you hang in there and just keep putting those resumes out and a job will come around.
And the best thing about this is I was able to tell my wife today. I QUIT!!!!
