A co-worker has a cabin in ely and had some tough fishing this weekend, it appears it was a tough opener for all in that area. He said the fish must have moved into much deeper water like 20-25 fow, that is where the caught the only fish of the weekend. so i would fish deep..

We were up there for the weekend and came home Monday. We have a place on Niles Bay on the West end and we did alright but nothing great. We probably caught 20 walleyes between four of us in two days. However, ever single fish we caught was over 20″. Nothing to take home with the slot, but a blast catching the better quality fish. We got all of our fish on lindy rigs with rainbow minnows. The best bite was from 7:00pm until dark each night. Mornings were pretty much dead and we didn’t fish much in the middle of the day. Enjoy your trip and be sure to report back.

What part of the lake will you be on?

The water temp was 55-58 degrees, so well warmer than we usually see this time of year. Most of the shallow spawning areas were dead as can be. The fish were on the move and were in narrows with some depth or deep holes/deep flats.

We caught fish on rainbows, chubs, shiners and leeches, but the best bite was on rainbows.

I still maintain that the musky explosion has really closed the window on the shallow water bite. They move into spawn, but dont stay long w/ those giant tankers cruising around.

my grandpa owns a cabin on birch point and he usually slip bobbers with lighted bobbers right at dark every year. but with this early ice out, the fish were no where. he ended up catching 4 walleyes all weekend. last year we caught somewhere between 40-50! that weather this spring was weird
