Marine plywood

I am in the process of converting an old boat trailer into a canoe trailer. I’m also planning to build a storage box to put under the canoe racks. Since the trailer will be stored outside, I’m thinking marine plywood might be the best way to go to build the box. Anyone know who carries it in the Twin Cities area (preferably SW metro or as close to there as possible)?

I’m also thinking that a couple coats of epoxy might be the best way to make it more weatherproof, along with caulking all the seams. Assuming that’s what I do, should I caulk first or epoxy first? I’m thinking epoxy first so I can seal the edges before I build the box. Any thoughts on any of that?

I special ordered a couple of sheets from Lowe’s in Shakopee a few years back… they jumped through some hoops for me that time.

It isn’t rot proof and it costs a lot. It’s for building boat hulls. And if you still did it, you’d be close money wise to buying an aluminum box of some sort.

Scherer Brothers Hopkins Yard has it.

Expensive though………You could go with a higher grade construction plywood and be about the same with a lot less spent if your set on wood. You’ll definitely want to seal it with spar Varnish which ever wood you end up getting.
I like the Aluminum box idea too.

I use treated plywood for boat decks and epoxy it. If you caulk it first, the epoxy will not stick to the caulk. They make fish tanks out of epoxyed plywood, so should not leak. Here is a web site to learn more about epoxy.

    Hope this helps.

Sherer bros is pretty spendy, maybe try Youngbloods.

Those that belong to the Minn woodworkers guild get a pretty good discount there and maybe could help ya, if that’s who you go though.

An aluminum box might do it. I’ll look at the price on building one of those, too. Thanks!
