OK, it’s been a while since I needed to know this: How many lines can I fish with where??

I used to fish Michigan a lot and we could have 2 lines in Wisconsin waters.. Seems from my reading of the regs that that has changed to THREE lines. Is that correct??

And, it seems we can only use one line per fisherman In Minnesota waters, e.g. Upper Red Lake. Correct??

Now, what about the Mississippi between Minnesota and Wisconsin. It’s not dealt with clearly in at least the Wisconsin regs. How many there??

TIA for all help. Wish I was fishing…

As a WI resident you can use 3 on the border water.

To fish the boundary waters if you are a WI or MN resident you must have a RESIDENT license from your own state.

ONLY if you are fishing the WI side. If you are on the MN side of the river, legally you have to follow their 2 line rule, even though WI allows 3 on the WI side.

OK, we’re going trolling on Pepin. We got me, WI resident with a WI (and MN license) I can use 3 lines on the WI side of the lake AND on the MN side of the lake, but only according to the WI warden.

NOW, I’ve got a MN resident who is fishing with me, who has both states licenses. On the WI side, he can’t be ticketed. On the MN side, he can only use 2 lines. But, only MN will ticket him…

    Correct?

Basically, yes… But you are pushing your luck on a few of those points…

The fact that you have both states licenses makes no difference at all. You are under your resident state license.

WI resident = 3 lines on WI side, BUT only two lines on MN side. WI warden has no jurisdiction on MN side, so you are screwed if MN side warden sees you fishing with 3 lines.

MN guy must use only 2 lines at all times according to the MN rules. But, since WI allows three, I not really sure a WI warden would care much if the MN guy is breaking MN law, but not WI law. That being said, a MN warden with can often get a pretty good view from the MN side. He could probably watch and see what you are up to.

Just stick with 2 lines each and you’ll be fine. If you Are WI, on WI side, go ahead with 3. If you are MN on WI side, use 3 if you want to push your luck. (I don’t recommend it) Nobody should be using 3 lines on the MN side.

At least, this is how I understand it.

You have to follow the law of what ever is your home state on border water. That is even if you have a license from both.
