Bent scag

My cousin pulled my Grandmother’s pontoon home with the engine a little low and bent the skag (sp) slightly below the prop. This is a 75 horse merc made in 2001, any idea what this would be made of? My dad thought Aluminum but i don’t believe so. What would a person have to do to have it straightened.

Thanks for any help from anyone who has been through the same situation.

Skegs are usually aluminum. A good welding/metal shop can fix that right up.

If the bend is slight as you describe, I’d just bang it out straight with a hammer. (Use wood between the skag and hammer) If you bust it off, no big deal. When they fix a bent skag, they usually just cut the old one off an weld on a new one. That skag is aluminum.

A big pipe wrench with a couple blocks of wood work well to.

I bent mine last year pretty bad, I cut off the bottom 2or3 inches and put a SCAG gaurd on with sand packed in the bottom. Worked pretty well. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I used a couple of brass hammers and gently tapped it back, you try and do it with one blow and good chance you’ll break it off.

    Least that’s been my experience.

Pretty funny on how many “experts” there are here on bent skegs and broken props. Too much experience!

Although I haven’t had the pleasure of this misfortune yet…I wanted to say, have your cousin pull it down the road the other way…should straighten it right out …

Sounds good to me, and probably the easiest way to fix it…
