odd things pulled from the water

I’ve pulled up an old reel, springs, and the occasional lure, like last weekend.

I had a guy with me a few years ago pull up a shad rap he ripped out of the rocks someone else lost. He cleaned it up a little, tied it on and caught a flathead on it a while later.

I snagged an anchor in the same area a few years prior to that, then proceeded to lose it at another lake. It was destined to be lost in the mud, I guess.

But the real cake toppers were a few years ago I was fishing the manmade inlet to a reservoir from shore. I felt something so I set the hook and could tell it was a real lethargic flathead or not a fish at all. Sure enough, it was the latter. I pulled up a HUGE raccoon that had been dead for quite some time. I reached down to pull him out of the way so I could fish and flesh just came off in my hand. I had that spot to myself that day (KILLER smell).

A few years before that I was lindy rigging the outlet of same said reservoir. I felt a little something, and couldn’t believe what I did: I hooked a dead drum in the mouth. Once again, he’d been dead for quite some time. Another boat was there watching, otherwise they woulda never believed what they saw. And I wouldn’t have either if I hadn’t seen it myself.

Last spring a friend told me about his buddy who lost a rod while shore fishing on Pool 9. A few nights later I’m fishing in the same area and I snagged some brush. Tangled in the brush was some line. I start pulling on the line and in comes a pole. It had all the sinkers on the line, but no hook. I told my friend about it and he should tell the other guy. Never heard a word from the guy who lost the pole.

I also caught a basketball once. It had a couple of cracks in it and was full of water.

Worst thing was while fishing a tiny little flooded slough in rural South Dakota. I pulled the power line up that went along the now flooded roadbed. Took me few seconds to realize what it was before cutting the line in a panic.
I also landed a rake, good old fashioned wood tined rake out in the middle of Upper Red.

Picked up a 3 man tent on Minnewaska once, thankfully nobody was inside.

My first leadcore catch was a tennis shoe with half the sole torn away from the shoe so it gave it some action when reeling it in. Not having caught a fish on lead yet, I was disappointed in how fish fought until I realized it was a shoe. I also caught a plastic deck chair, a landing net, and a twin bed spring with my anchor once.

My favorite one though occurred out in Oregon floating salmon on the lower Trask river. My buddy got a bad case of intestinal armageddon and we were too far from a boat ramp for him to wait. He dropped and hung it over the side of the boat (his boat). It sounded like a hail storm on a farm pond for a minute or so, and he then realized he had nothing to wipe with. Used a towel and tossed it over because he didn’t want it in his boat. Half an hour later, he snags something, and it turns out to be his towel. Only thing worse was when we finally took the boat out, he realized the side of his boat was covered in poo.

I pulled the owner of fm out of the water twice in one spring. Definitely strange. Definitely ugly. Definitely won’t do it again.

While fishing on pool 4 I caught a st. criox legend tourney with a cardinal reel. I saw a post here on IDO about a guy who had lost one in the area I was fishing so I stopped in and dropped it off at Everts and Dean was able to get it back to the guy.

Was trolling during the early part of the salmon run in the Sturgeon Bay ship canal a number of years ago with my dad and a buddy when a dead squirrel “wrapped” itself around one of the downrigger cables at the surface. Before we could even get something to knock it off, it started its decent down the cable. Must have rolled off when it when it hit the downrigger ball and you guessed it…squirrel on

And no….they did not have skid marks…..Me thinks they were removed for “other” reasons…..

several rods and reels, most not worth cleaning up.

    several anchors

Some lures that could be cleaned up, but the jackpot was a hunk of line with 2 almost new shad raps attached.

a hunk of wood with a stringer and live carp attached

an ice fishing tip up with a live carp still attached

old frayed out barge rope (in my opinion, the worst thing you can snag other than something dead)

    remnants of filleted walleye

    a bicycle with bent tires

I’ve caught shirts, garbage bags (without puppies), ha ha. a tire, a couple rods, one with a reel. Clam, crayfish, quite a few docks of coarse. A couple alligators down by okeechobee. a seagull picked up my topwater bait once. a rickety old skateboard. lines and lures. that’s all I can recall right now.

In SD I caught someone’s broken off crappie rig by the hook that was open while jigging. The other hook still had a nice pike on it!!!

The fully intact skeleton of a small piglet. The only flesh left on it was the snout, and that’s where the hook snagged it. I was six or seven at the time.

This could be one of the best threads ever! I wish I had something cool to post, best I’ve got is a live clam and snapping turtle…

That reminds me. One time on the Chip, I caught a muskrat. It was crazy. I saw it jump off the bank. It was with a whole family of muskrats. I remember thinking, “He’s coming after my lure.” Then I was like…can’t be. Then he bit it and the fight was on. I was pulling him to the boat when the rest of the clan came to the rescue. It was a mess. My dad was swearing and yelling at me to cut the line. But, I was able to free said lure from muskrat and all was fine. Crazy…

The normal: brand new landing net with the price tag from Fleet Farm on it, a couple rods and reels, all manner of clothing from top to bottom, parts of docks, anchors, etc… The not so normal: a duck on two different occasions (no I wasn’t trying) my dad caught a blue heron by accident when it swooped down to hit a weed fouled spoon while trolling. I’ve almost had to deal with a bald eagle doing the same with a small bass struggling on a trolling rod. And a 6 pack of Leinies with 2 cans missing caught by the plastic ring. Steel cans and nope, didn’t even think of giving it a taste.

    Speaking of critters caught…

    I had a mallard grab a frog once,,Thankfully didn’t get hooked!

Had a seagull take a topwater back in my younger days, That one was hooked!

And most recently, Lindy rigging with a floater and a minnow.. Tick tick,, started feeding line then saw a Loon pop up about 30 feet from my boat. I could see my floater in her mouth and my minnow attached.. One quick snap of my rod and it popped out! Whew!

I once pulled in an _old_ baitcaster on a fiberglass rod. I wish I still had that thing, but I believe it got tossed when I was still a kid.

A shoe, serveral logs, trees, branches, a few clams, crayfish, plastic bags, a buddy pulled out a whole wal-mart bag full of dirty diapers once, and another time a purse containing make-up and feminine hygiene products but no wallet. Suspicious.

Best of all, tho, this one time I pulled this huge slimy thing out of the water. Turns out later it was called a “fish” and people actually value them as food!

    Crazy stuff, that…

Back in the early 60S I caught one of those steel deer tags during deer season. Took it to the ranger station in Wyalusing State park and the owner was notified by the number on the tag. At the time I was 12. Jerry
