I’ve managed to “catch” some strange things while fishing but Sunday on the Croix was one of my worst. I was pulling cranks and felt my line get very heavy so I set the hook and immediately knew it wasn’t a fish, it just layed there flat as i was winding in my line, I thought maybe a smaller log or and old diaper, something, but when I got it close to the boat, it was an old shredded tennis shoe and wouldn’t you know it all 6 hooks were imbedded in the canvas or leather whatever it was. Well after about 10 mins of cutting, pulling and swearing, I finally cut my line and tossed it in the boat, I got home and still couldn’t get those hooks out of the thing, well I ended up tossing that flicker shad away along with the shoe, I’m glad it wasn’t an expensive crank, but those flicker shads are just kicking the eyes butts right now and it’s gone. What are some of the odd things you’ve reeled in?

Pulled in a nice piece of barge rope last night. Also pulled in a water spike anchor rope and anchor. Kinda felt like I had won the lottery.
May 10, 2010 at 10:39 pm #870952Grannie panties, condoms, anchors, a 1950’s Hamm’s bottle cap, and an old rusty metal Copenhagen sign.

it could have been worse…at least nothing was attached to that shoe…
wkwPosts: 730May 10, 2010 at 10:53 pm #870958A few years ago my son was in the back channel pre-fishing for a tournament when another fisherman hit him from behind, sliding down the gunwale, breaking off rods, rodholders, etc.
Almost to the day a year later both of my boys were in the same cut and snagged something. Upon reeling it in, they realized that it was one of the rods and reels that got knocked off the boat a year earlier. I cleaned it up and still use it today. What are your chances of doing that ?
WKWwkwPosts: 730May 10, 2010 at 11:08 pm #870969And one more…
Fishing a tournament out of Colville, my son forgot his cap, so I gave him my red Tuffy cap to wear. As we went through a little cut at high speed, it blew off. An hour later I see a red blob coming down stream, and sure enough, it was my favorite red Tuffy cap ! Complete with a prop gash in the bill from the boat that was following us.
WKWMay 10, 2010 at 11:15 pm #870971I pulled an old rusty 10 speed up with my anchor on Croix a few years ago.
May 10, 2010 at 11:19 pm #870975A lot of old rusted junk/garbage. But stuff that was still good. At least 3 landing nets. A drift sock. A rod, reel and lighted bobber that had not been in the water too long.
“Caught” a tennis shoe once. Thought it “Fought” like a nice walleye. If you fish with me, you may even hear a comment like: “Feels like a nice tennis shoe….”
That shoe had a dang good fight!!!-J.

May 10, 2010 at 11:28 pm #870980A bag of chit….not once but twice ….thought I’d tell ya before Mikehd did
It was his anchor though we were trying to retrieve
I have had hooks buried to the point of no return it items also I just cut the split rings and replace rings and hooks. Just a little cheaper and I like changing hardware now and then anyways.
May 10, 2010 at 11:31 pm #870982One of the strangest I’ve caught was an old manual bike tire pump. WTF?
May 10, 2010 at 11:33 pm #870983not from open water, but this is tops in my book, buddy hooked a real nice “crappie” we just busted a gut when he pulled this out!
May 10, 2010 at 11:42 pm #870984Chomps, that pic reminds of a certain someone doing battle with a true Mille Lacs giant….

Don’t forget the rotten bullfrog that almost made you throw up on your shoes.
The summer is lost that anchor I did find a nice navy anchor and a bell anchor that is now part of Mr. Clarks arsenal. When I was pulling up one of the anchor ropes I had snagged I commented that I hoped there wasn’t a body attached to it and my wife starts screaming “just drop it, just drop it”. I’m glad I didn’t, that was a nice navy anchor.

That is why I call walleyes wet socks! That is how they fight typically.

was it below the hwy 94 bridge? i pulled up a rusty 10 speed about 10 years ago on the croix. i’ll find the pic and post it up.
May 11, 2010 at 12:47 am #871004I always wanted another plastic coated 16 pound anchor that came with my Lund. I never looked real hard, but never could find one.
One of my clients pulled up my anchor on P4 and he was struggling with it. Turned out it was the EXACT style of anchor I was looking for!
If anyone finds a brand new, never used Rapala digital scale in the Vermilion…you can have it. It’s been there for 5 years.
May 11, 2010 at 2:19 am #871038I caught a life jacket on Pool 2 once. It doesnt seem that unusual, until you think, “how in the heck does a life jacket get on the bottom of the river????”
May 11, 2010 at 2:25 am #871045My freshman year in college I caught a beer keg on Lake Menomin
Only in Menomonie!
May 11, 2010 at 2:36 am #871055Pulled up my 18lbs. river special with a 10 pound mushroom anchor on top of it. Chanches are better at hittin the lotto I think.
May 11, 2010 at 2:47 am #871059I’ve pulled up all sorts of crud too. But my best deal was the day on P4 with MikeW that my vest style life jacket blew out of the boat. I didn’t notice until later and had no idea where it had gone. Then a little later that day I spy a vest style life jacket of a different color floating along just the same as the one I lost. I pulled it out and it is still in my boat 3 years later. I broke even that day! I just hope the other guy who lost the life jacket found mine.
