I finally found morels

So after years of kind of dinkin’ around and making some small efforts, the stars aligned and I found some morels in the woods behind my house. I only found 3; but they were good sized and sitting by a dead elm on a north facing slope. I scoured the area, but couldn’t locate any more. So I took them back to the house and fried them in butter. Yummy!

Seeing those morels sitting there after many failed attempts was like catching that 10 lb walleye!

I hear you, I used to find a ton as a kid but can’t seem to find anywhere to pick any up around the cities since I moved here 10 years ago. Congradulations and maybe some of your luck will spread over to me.

I went out this afternoon after getting home from work and found a big Tupperware bowl full. Washed them up, cut them in half and will cook them tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll have time to find more tomorrow too.

We have a lot of rain in the forecast for this upcoming week…too bad we dind’t have a lot of heat to go with it. A good stretch of heat after this rain might trigger one last good run on shrooms

Ya, I know. Was thinking about getting the snow blower ready this morning. Had a big mature doe in the back yard at about 6 and her breathe made it look like it was 20 below

I just found a bunch too, cut and cleaned sitting on the counter, a co-worker brought some in today to share, the taste is still lingering in my mouth….. awesome, makes a beautiful day stuck at work all well worth it. Fried in butter they just don’t need anything else.

I’ve been eating them all weekend! With help from friends, we’ve been able to locate them pretty easily this year, and they’re plentiful.

Supposedly the heat is coming. And the rain is here for sure now. It could be a stellar finish?

alot of times guys will shake the morrels over the ground after picking them to release any spores on the mushroom in anticipation of finding morrels there next year

I use a mesh bag called the “shroom sack” to collect my bounty. It’s a durable bag which stands up well to multiflora rose bushes & Japanese barberry shrubs that dot the hills & valleys of SW WI. Given the mesh qualities of the bag ~ spores & insects have a means to escape while keeping your collection aerated. All is not so perfect however. You can fit nearly 6lbs. of morchella in one sack “filled to the rim” but adding anything over roughly 4lbs and you severly compromise the shape of the some of the morels as the weight of the morels on top will flatten morels near the bottom. Especially during late season with the degrading quality of morels.

I know thats the general theory, but has anyone here specifically tried this? Find a spot one year that is devoid of morels, shake spores into/onto the ground in that area, then find mushrooms there the next year???

Just curious if you guys have had success with “seeding” mushrooms into a very specific location…

hasn’t worked for me yet, just remember, a spore isn’t exactly like a seed. The spore just starts the network of fibers under ground, it would take something to stimulate these fibers to get the morels popp’n

If ‘seeding’ were successful, wouldn’t morels be commercially grown? I’ve never seen that done with significant success yet, they are not on the store shelves where I live.

my cuz always does it and finds morrels in the same areas every year. though the size and quality very year to year. that has more to do with the weather though
