The primary reason to wear sunglasses when fishing

This is my best friend’s dad.
Tossing a hula popper for bass. Premature hook set rocketed the lure back towards him. It happened so fast, he ducked, but only to duck into the pathway of the lure.

The hooks dug into his eyeball, but not the pupil. The doctor was able to salvage his vision.

OMG, that’s sick. I’m glad he kept his vision. If I were him I’d wear a motorcycle helmet while fishing from here out. Full shield.

    Yikes!!

I’ve had a couple close calls, not with crankbaits but with 1/4oz jigs flying off wingdams like a mini-rockets.

Glad to hear he’ll be OK

It can happen so fast and so easy. I always get nervous when a fish is thrashing at the side of the boat. Rod bent and everbody is looking over the edge at the fish.

Glad he is OK. I try and ALWAYS ware glasses in the boat.

This makes me ask a question though. Would glass lens sunglasses shatter in this case and possibily even cause more damamge? Actually, I think they would not with a Hula Popper, but how about a small dense object like a Tungsten sinker?

That’s just sick to look at. There is something about eye injury that just makes me sick to look at. A huge fear of mine.

I bet there was a ‘moment’ in the boat when you realize just what has happened. I’m sure the ride back to the launch was interesting and harrowing!

That picture gives me the willies.

Just from wearing them I know there’s several different lens materials they use, Polycarbonate (sp?) are suppose to be impact resistant, not sure if they’d stop a sinker at warp speed though.

Best bet imho is to get safety glass lenes, you can now get them in some pretty decent frames and styles.

We get them though work, and have fewer styles of frames, but I’m wondering if any frame could be used with safety glass if you bought them on your own?

Ouch, I am also glad to hear his vision as spared. My nephew sent a email a few weeks back of another guy who took a hook in the eye. This is why when the Texas Rigged worm gets snagged and i am pulling the line taught, I make everyone get below the gunwale.

I guess I never really thought of it this way since I never cast anything,,and rarely use cranks. Glad he’s okay!! And thanks for the post, it could happen with a bare hook n a beed.

I thought the main reason to wear sunglasses was so you could stare at all the ladies passing by in the summer time….. Glad to hear he’s OK.

Polycarbonate WILL stop a flying sinker (personal experience), I am just wondering if the high dollar glass lenses would, or if there is a shatter risk.

This photo makes me want to go buy a THIRD set of shades to keep in the boat in case I somehow manage to drop two pair into the lake while fishing!
Good to hear he is okay!

This is me in Canada June 2007. Same kind of deal went to set the hook, daredevil was flying toward my face. I ducked and put my hands up to protect my face and wham. Spent an hour in the Intl. Falls ER to get it removed. The only permanent damage is to my ego. Still get teased about it from my fishing buddies.

my dad got a muskie lure in his eye 2yrs ago and it dug so far into his eye that the eyeball itself popped out. the doctors managed to take the huge lure out but his vision in his left eye is very bad now. glad to hear your ok!

    From 2005.

I told my fishing partner he was casting like a girl.

    I won’t do that again.

Glad to hear they were able to save his vision. Hard to save the ego though My brother-n-law had about a 8-10# walleye smack a musky bait. He had the brite idea that he would flip it into the boat without the net. Unbuttoned when he tried to swing and caught it just beneath his eye. Years later and he still has a discolored welt beneath his eye to remind him how important glasses are.

After seeing this I think a pair of glasses will be on at all times while fishing. I unfortunately lost my left eye due to being shot when I was 16. Glad to hear he is ok.

But has been said numerous times we are all glad they saved hte eyesite. I have glasses to see and they have saved me from lesser pains numerous times. I guess I’ll rethink contacts.
