Man guys, I dont mean to post this like a wuss but seriously… We got caught out on Spring Lake on the Miss in that storm today in a canoe!! I thought I was going to be a goner. I have never been so scared in my life on a watercraft ever! We lost an ore and were forced to land on shore a few miles from the truck. All I can say is that I am glad to be here typing tonight.

I take it that there was lightening? If so, I won’t judge you. I probably be still curled up on shore or pacing it if it was me. I get paranoid about lightning. Or was it just the wind? I would have wanted to be in a canoe in that wind either!
May 5, 2010 at 11:03 am #869378Not the place I would want to be either!
Canoe going sidways with the wind in large waves and putting an oar in just about tips a person over. That wind came up quick!
You must have kept your wits about you!

May 5, 2010 at 1:47 pm #869425I feel for you!!! I must have been going past you on the river then as the storm hit me as I was going north past Spring Lake just before Pine Bend and the wind/waves was horrible!! There wasn’t any lightning and only a few drops of rain (it never really rained?) but the 60+ mph winds really slowed me down in my Tracker w/50 Merc. Plus the dust cloud hurts my eyes!! I pulled into a cove for a few hours until it slowed somewhat. Had I have known that wind was coming I would have stayed put.
May 5, 2010 at 2:11 pm #869443Glad you made it, I hear ya, I still get a little spooked in a 20ft boat when the rollers are going on oahe. Wind can really sneak up on you. I have been in boats on waves so bad that I have had to hold a grown man down that was going to jump out of the boat. Thank the big guy upstairs!

May 5, 2010 at 2:47 pm #869471It can sneak up on a guy and put the fear of god in you quick! I was caught north of Pelican Island on main lake Leech during the famous fourth of July Storm. I remember the 219 Stratos bow was not clearing the crest of the waves and the motor had already crawled out of the trough of the waves . It had to be the scariest forty five minutes I will ever experience. I remember when I finally made it back to the docks at the resort my wife fell to her knees at the docks crying when I came around the corner of the harbor. Search and rescue figured I was capsized somewhere as my marine band took so much water it conked out and they could not see that black boat in waves and rain. Nothing sissy about the original post at all, I grew up on wild and windy Upper Red and I still get very nervous when it starts rolling.
May 5, 2010 at 2:58 pm #869475To add a little humor or lighten up the situation I was thinking about this and remembered a story my great grandfather used to tell. Back in the homestead days when he would run cargo from Redby on the south shore of Lower Red Lake to the north shore of Upper Red lake the Indians would often hitch a ride. They would tie their canoes off to the boat and ride on the cargo boat to save some paddling. Well one day this was going on and a wind quickly came up making for some rough seas. The Indians all abandoned ship for their canoes…they felt safer in their canoes then on that big cargo boat.

May 5, 2010 at 5:52 pm #869536I have 30 years if canoe trips in BWCWA and Canada and I have been in some huge waves that made my cheeks pucker. The only time I have flipped was in some not so big waves, just lost my concentration and over we went – very scary. I have stayed put many days when it was just too windy to be out – a GOOD canoe will roll with the waves if you know what you are doing – very hard to trust the boat in those conditions.
May 5, 2010 at 6:20 pm #869546That is funny as heck about the Indians jumping into their canoes!! I gotta remember that one. Guys, after reading this thread and these responses I am seriously saying my thanks to all that derserve one. Today it is now more a laughing matter but at the time I was so puckered you could not pound a greased BB through my with a sledge hammer. Thanks all, I am happy to be alive
