Celebrating 62 Years of Fishing Together

I just returned from Kansas and fishing with my 89 year old Dad. That makes 62 years of fishing together. We started on a county fishing lake with no luck at all except for about a half dozen three inch bluegill. We went to this farm pond the next day and used the bluegill for cut bait. Dad is holding a channel cat that probably weighed 4#. We went to a second farm pond and caught three more. Correction, he caught three more. He skunked me which is not unusual. He is the best bank fisherman I have ever met. Many times I have watched him fish shoulder to shoulder with other guys and catch ten times more fish. He would even exchange rods with them and keep right on catching fish.

This is the whole pond. They fish water that would freeze solid in Minnesota and there are remarkable numbers of fish in these small ponds. There is little fishing pressure, so the fishing is usually pretty good. We went to a third pond the next day and caught three more channel cat (my turn, his Zebco 33 would not cast far enough to reach them). We also caught 25 Largemouth Bass. What fun.

I hate so see him grow old but the other side of the coin is that we can still fish together. I’m not sure who had more fun.

    Way Cool!

    I call it payback time!

I told my dad we would be fishing Winni even as long as I could wheel him to the boat. Which I did his second to last time out. The last time he used a walker….and out fished me both times I might add.

If you listen closely around the Hutchinson area lakes, every Oct 4 you’ll hear the sunfish rejoicing!

Good reminder to get your Dad’s out this summer…might not want to forget the Mom’s either!

Having been one of them that never had his father take him out, I hope you realize how lucky you are.
Great to hear and hope there’s many more journeys with him.

Nice story, thanks for sharing it with us. These memories are great and will last forever. My dad is coming to MN for a visit this weekend and I am looking forward to getting him out on the river. If you are lucky, it all comes full circle and you get the chance to take them out while remembering all the times they too you out as a kid.

“The ones who matter the most are the children.”–Lakota proverb.
Bet your dad knows this better than anyone. Did he eat bacon all his life, too, like Burgess Meredith playing Pops in Grumpy? Hope it’s a long time till you find an empty couch at the lakeshore. Mine left us at 85–too long ago– after watching a video of his favorite antique farm show parade from his nursing home bed.
    Happy Father’s — and Mother’s — Days, everyone!

Make every moment count! I’m a bit jealous I have to admit. My mother is 74 and loves to fish. Her health has deteriorated so bad, that I have not been able to get her out for the last couple of years. It’s sickening to see someone not able to do the things they love the most. On a more selfish note, it drives me nuts that she can not get out and see how much I have advanced in fishing and hunting. She just gets to listen to the stories, look at the pictures, and get depressed because she can’t go with.
