I need some help from the Brotherhood..I am a T-8 guy and can change oil on those in a snap! I am sure this motor is easy as well, but nothing is jumping out at me. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

    BTW, it is a 96 9.9 4 stroke.

Buy the oil filter wrench. Worth every penny. Roll of paper towels, its a mess. The drain screw is in the same general area as the T8 if I remember correctly. Use Mobile 1 semi syn.

    Good Luck.

I have a ’97 9.9 4 stroke. I assume it should be the same with one year difference..

Drain bolt is hidden in the back of the motor just above the lower unit. Should be a phillips screw holding a cover plate. Remove the cover and you’ll see a bolt up inside, loosen it and get ready for oil to flow.

Manual says there is a drain funnel provided to assist in draining, but I haven’t seen mine. Might be hidden in there? (I learned something new) The funnel pops into place to divert oil outward to collect and avoid a mess.

Oil filter is located to the right (port side) of the filler hole that should be obvious to see (yellow cap). There is a bolt that fastens the filter, just loosen, pull it out and clean it. I clean the screen with carb cleaner or gasoline. Make sure the O-rings are good and in place and fasten it back in.

The motor takes one quart of oil of your choice.

    Good luck.

I could be wrong but seem to rember that older 2 stroke Mercurys had a filter like Chuck Nordahl mentioned, just clean it off and stuff it back in. Also remember that the lower spark plug had a tendency to crud up faster than the top plug…Newer models including 4 strokes may have a small canister filter. Though I had one laying around in the garage, but couldn’t find it. I have switched to Yamaha 4 strokes (200 and 8 kicker) on an 1850 Tyee. Had Mercury motors on all of my Lund boats since 1985. Just thought I’d give the MammyJammers a try.
