Im thinking about spending a day on Menomin this weekend. I’ll be fishing with someone who is familr only with panfishing in the river. Any comments on fishing the river vs the lake? With the early spring, I imagine one should be equipped with an aresenal of techniques. Any advice would be appreciated!

A good multispecies approach would be to target the river system and cutoff area casting inline spinners or crankbaits along emerging weeds and timber. Would be a good tactic to cover water and get you into plenty of bass northerns and occasional walleye as well.

    Good luck!

With opener being this Saturday it is most likely going to be a zoo. I would follow the advice given above and if you get bored try throwing a slip bobber and minnow around one of the many downed trees along the shoreline up there. Good Luck !

Under the 94 bridge is always good for walleye… of course there will probably be 15 or more boats under there this weekend. Good luck this weekend!

The 94 bite should be interesting-was almost nonexistant last year compared to years past due to lack of flow-which does not look positive for this year. There were some hit and miss days for guys last year, nothing like the consistancy of years past. But, who knows-always worth a try!

I used to fish that lake at least 4 times a week when I lived in town and I used to do very well fishing under the bridge. I don’t live in Menomonie any more and to be honest, I haven’t fished that lake hardly at all the past few years.

Doc, how has the lake been overall for walleyes the last few years?

    Magnum,

2 years ago we did very well for numbers and CPR’s quite a few eyes over 24″. Last year after our spring fish kill we did not do as well. The fish we did catch were bigger and nearly all were released. The biggest one last year was 28 1/2″. Hopefully this year rebounds a little bit. I didn’t see the fish kill numbers like we had last year.

For me, it was fine but my 94 bridge bite died-or really did not exist compared to years past. Seems since not moving as much water, the fish tended not to be drawn into the region as seams never set up. Most my fish came from down in the lake much earlier than years past. Personally, I am hoping for a good 94 bite (or river bite for that matter) as in the past May had been red hot.
Russ, a 28 is GREAT for this lake!
