I am installing hb-998c-si today and not sure about cabling.
    It have 4 connectors:
    1-power
    2-temp/speed
    3-communication/gps
    4-transducer

I have 1-3-4. I couldn’t figured out where 2 from and Y-cable.Do I left out 2 and the Y-cable since I’m having only this unit installing on my boat?
Do I just go ahead plug in 1-3-4?.

Unless you have an external temp probe (one that is NOT part of the transducer) or speed paddlewheel, you will end up with only three cables running to the back of your unit. The standard transducer comes with temp included, so that info will be transmitted to the unit using the transducer cable.

    Welcome to the HB family!!

Yup, 1,3 and 4. As Jason said, the temp is in the ducer. And your speed will be supplied via GPS.

    Thanks Jason and Wade.

Run into another problem, my 998 power cable is not along enough to reach the bow. I have an old power cable for HB-100 model and want to just cut that and connect to 998 power cable even though it have different gauge side. Would that work or is it a NO NO?

It took more time trying to find a place for it then the hooked up. this thing is much larger then it look online.

can’t wait to take it out for a test run.

Don’t do that, as you’ll lose the power choke (the disc-shaped appendage on the head unit end of the power cable). The power choke is one of the tools that helps to eliminate electrical interference from other accessories in your boat (trolling motor, radios, etc).

This may be a dumb question. Why don’t you just run a set of 14 gauge wires from the battery to the bow and then connect the power cables to the the wires your just ran. I’m not understanding what you would be cutting.

I agree with Ruger’s suggestion. A few years ago, when I installed my first 1197, I had a weird reading on the Voltmeter. The battery would read 13.X volts when tested at the battery. But the 1197 would only display 10.X volts and give me low voltage warnings. After tracing the wire out for the accessories feed beneath my dash, I found a segment spliced in with 18awg wire. I ran a 14awg stranded with in-line fuse direct from the battery to the dash, then spliced in the factory power cable. From that time on, the Voltmeter in the unit is identical to a test on the battery.

Thanks Ruger, is that what it is.14guage.
I don’t fix mount this unit because i only have 1.I want to be able to moved back and forth between the bow and the console. Since i already have a extra power cable from an old HB-100 that already hooked up, I though i could just cut the head of that cable and connect it to 998 power cable for extension.
Is a 14gauge speaker cable would do it?

    Ok, now I get it.

    1. So I guess my question is how are you going to connect the GPS puck up in the bow? Or are you going to just not use a GPS up in the bow?

    2. I assume you are using a universal transducer on a bow mount trolling motor so the transducer is not an issue.

    3. If you are using a Universal Trolling motor transducer in the bow and not needing the GPS. I would suggest calling Humminbird and getting another 998 power cord from them. Then you can have a power cord and transducer cord in the bow and the stern ready for your unit where ever you’d want it.

    Does that make sense?

I guess I never asked. Does the HB-100 power cord fit? I’m not sure I’d hook my 998 up to a questionable power cord and fire it up. That’s a lot of money on the line.
