Has anyone purchased a new boat out of state recently and if so I’m wondering how the sales tax is handled. I understand calling the DMV would be be my best bet but just wondering if anybody can give me a heads up how this is handled. I’ve heard among a number of things that the trailer and hull are taxed at the time of registration but the motor is not. Not sure if that is true? Anybody with any insight would great. Thanks in advance, Randy

In Minnesota because outboards do not carry a title, you will only be paying tax on the boat and trailer. Be prepared to give a value mon the boat and trailer seperately. This is what I was told in 06′ when I bought one new in MO. It’s nice to save a good chunk of cash and not having to pay tax on the outboard.

I only paid taxes in MN on my trailer when I purchased my triton from a guy selling it in WI last fall.

x2, I only had to pay tax on my trailer. They asked what the trailer was worth, I said $200. That what I had to pay tax on. The boat came from Ill.

You only pay tax on the trailer. The license for the boat is via the DNR and they are NOT a tax collection agency thus no tax.

I have purchased used from a private party out of state before and yes in that case I only paid tax on the trailer when I went to the courthouse. I’m wondering if it is the same when purchasing new from a dealer? Thanks, Randy

Just thought I’d post my findings after placing a call to the local office in case anybody runs into this in the future. I was told the dealer needs to break my receipt of purchase down to boat value, motor value and trailer value. I only need to pay tax on the boat and trailer when I register it in MN. Thanks to all for your input, Randy
