I’m going to install a permanent gas tank in my boat and will need to install a fan to blow out fumes. Anybody know how big a fan or where to locate it?

    Thanks for any help.

Why would you need a fan ? ,I would think if you have a vented tank or cap there shouldnt be fumes to worry about ,BUT, I am always willing to learn something new.

    Jerry,

Are you sure you will need a fan? Most boats with a B/I tank just have in and out scoop air vents.

I’ve had both outboard and I/Os with built in tanks
the only ones that had fans were the I/Os.
I think it has to due to the fact that the carb. is enclosed in the hull (doghouse)
other wise all I’ve had were the air scoops (in/out)on outboards
you can order parts from OVERTONS go to GANDER MTN. web site
they have a link to OVERTONS they are owned by gander
    hope this helps

I’ve only ever seen fans on boats with an inboard engine. Those fans clear engine compartment area.

All the boats I’ve seen that had exhaust systems for venting were fairly large, 28′ and bigger and inboards at that.

Remember a fan unless its rated for combustibles is a ignition source, so if you use one, make sure its rated for that purpose.

I’m betting if your using the basic fishing boat, venting would be all you’d need.

Mine came with a 40 gallon tank, and its just vented.

Is it an outboard or inboard? Outboard you don’t need one>

I have a crestliner that just got a new vinyl floor. While replacing the floor I was able to get a good look at the inboard tank. A vent on both ends of the tank and a filler hose were the only venting/airflow accomodations in place. Thats on an aluminum tank that is ~18gallons

Can you post a pic of the boat, the tank, and where it’s going to go?
Without that info, all the replies are correct.

Guess I caused more confusion than anything else. I’m going to Kansas to take my 89 year old father fishing. Their law states that if you have a permanently mounted fuel tank, you have to have a fan to exhaust fuel fumes. I have the tank vented to the outside of the boat. I agree with all of you, I have only seen fan systems on inboard engines. I’m going to take a closer look. Thanks to all of you for trying. If I get better or more information, I’ll post it so we can work on it.
