What does anybody know about them and that end of the lake?
I drove by yesterday and saw seasonal pads going in. Never fished up there so I’m looking for input.

Posted it here because not everybody with info visits the Mille Lacs forum this early in the year.

I am unsure about the pads, but Appledorns is a very nice place the stay. The wife and I are a little fussy regarding accomadations (dumps versus clean) and this place is far from a dump. I guess I’d set the Red Door as the standard for a nice clean place to stay and Appledorns is right with them. Also, Paul runs the show and is very good to work with.

This end of the lake is a structure fishermans dream….Tons of rock piles, reefs and gravel flats. You are also in prime smallie territory.

Do they still need to put all boats in and out like the old Karpens did?

Went out of appeldoorn’s this year ice fishing. Very nice house, good people to deal with. Like the early post said, great fishing structure.

I looking forward to fishing out of that area in the summer this year.

Jon – what do you mean when you say “Do they still need to put all boats in and out like the old Karpens did?” Is it tough to launch from there because so many people fish out of there?

    Thanks

No. I mean there is no harbor. So when Karpens owned it, you needed to have the tractor back you in. The water is shallow until you are about 30 yards off shore. They unkook your trailer. Latch it up to an old farm tractor and dump you in. Then go get your trailer an pull you out when your’re done fishing. If you stay there, you just tie off to the dock. It can be a cluster-^$%^%$ if you are getting chased off the lake when a storm hits!! Just curious if they ever dredged out a harbor or boat launch there???

JJ means that they would use a tractor to back your trailer in and out, and I think in lower water they still do, but that is word of mouth not directly from personal experiences.

I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with them. Never ever would I recommend Appledorns.

Brian, there is a place about 4 miles north of there…. also very clean cabins & grounds, full serve bar/restaurant and a nice harbor.. no tractor business there

Was that in the summer or winter? What kind of experiance did you have there? Like I said, I have ice fished out of there quite a bit, was satisfied with the place. I enjoyed fishing out of their ice house.

I’m just curious because I’m going up to Mille Lacs for opener this year and I’m staying at the state park, and I haven’t decided were to launch my boat from.

There is a brand new public access with a protected harbor at Liberty Beach that is very nice! Real close to Appledorns, 1 mile north of where Hwy 18 W hits 47.

There is a very nice access at the State Park if that is where you are staying. Brand new docks and very nice! Also there is the Thains River access by MacQuoids..kinda shallow, but if you go slow it’s fine.

The only thing is how busy are the public accesses going to be on opener. I was planning on hitting that access Sun afternoon, I’m hoping the lake traffic dies down by then.

Everything is going to be busy. Fr. Hennepin may be the best bet!
