I’ve been seeing a lot of stuff being sold from Hong Kong on EBay, including listings for chinese/japanese lures and reels.

Has anyone ever had any experience with these or know if they’re any good? I’m sure big companies like Rapala all make their stuff there, how much different can they be?

Several lure companies already get their subfunished or finished lures from China and Japan, or have assembly operations in Pacific shield countries.
We considered going into the blade mfg business a while back and there were lots of Chinese finished/unfinished blades out there for wholesale.
Aside from St. Croix (two models made in Mexico), most rods today are made or assembled in China…and reels also. Some are very high quality, some are not…

    Tom-

All good points. Not sure what the beef is with the orient. Most of our fishing equipment is made overseas.

    Reels – Diawa, Shimano, etc.

Most of the Rods are made in China. Even St. Croix is having products made outside of WI now. This was not the case 10 years ago. Competitive pressures and improved quality have made this a reality.

Most of the high-end hard baits are made in Japan. Even Rapala has product manufactured in the orient.

Almost all the high-end hooks are made overseas.

    Electronics, Outboard Motors, etc.

Japan bass fisherman are responsible for most of the finesse tactics that are now employed by most successful tournament fisherman.

It is reality and dominates our industry.

To me personally I have a hard time with buying anything from China or any other country for that matter. It really saddens me to think that one of my favorite fishing rods is being manufactured over there. I buy those types of products specifically because they are made in the USA. I think that NAFTA was the biggest misktake this country has made in the last 20 years. All it has done is provide the opportunity for all of those jobs, with decent wages to be shipped overseas. It not only takes all those jobs with it, it forced those people who were making a decent living at that time, into the unemployment lines. I have been very fortuate to have made a decent living, and count my blessings every day for that. I work at the MSP airport and have watched thousands of hard working people lose their jobs, jobs that were shipped overseas, and see the low wages that those companies now pay minority workers for those same sevices.

It is undeniable about the practice of shipping manufacturing jobs to China. Along with those jobs went large portion of taxes collected by our government that were associated with those jobs, so we just slip further and further into debt with China. Guess who is going to be paying that debt!!

I choose to spend the money that I have on the goods and services provided by local buisnesses whenever possible.

I may be ranting here, but there it is.

I agree totally with you and cant understand why more people dont see the common sense in this,Perhaps their to educated

I agree 100% Jeff, but I think reversing the foreign trade landslide since NAFTA is not going to happen…
The best thing to do now is to get those foreign companies to start building plants here (like Toyota). Then at least we will have some jobs and taxes paid.

The horse is out of the barn. The reality of foreign manufacturing and investment is here and is now part of the economic landscape.

Americans have always been hardworking, clever and persistent. It is up to all of us to figure out how to win in the new era.

Our present situation of rewarding those with nothing, allowing people to receive benefits without ever having contributing and redistributing wealth flies in the face of the American Dream.

Asking our government to protect us from foreign competition is simply another form of a “bailout”.

We should promote fair trade and doing bussiness with countries with double standards will leave us on the short end, as I believe we are starting to see.Think they will stop at manufacturing jobs,I doubt it.Maybe we could buy cheap goverment subsidized insurance from China. You will never see a St croix in my boat if it isn’t made here.
