    Hello –

I just purchased a new(used) boat with a 40 HP 4 stroke Yamaha. However it did not come with a transom saver. I don’t know much about them but how important is it if I don’t travel with the boat much at all because it mainly stays on the lake where we live. However, I will be taking the boat in for the yearly only change maintenance which is about a 20 mile drive one way. Do you guys think I need one? It does have electric trim/tilt not sure if that will matter? Thanks.

no, put a short 2 by 4 between motor and transom trim down until tight and away ya go, or just nothing at all its only 20 miles twice a year

    Chad,

For that little travel I think you’re safe to go without.

Your motor may/should have a flip up/down lever for it to rest on if you trim it up a ways. I would think that is sufficient for a 20 mile trip once a year.

I’ve heard a 40 really isn’t big enough to really worry about, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’m still a bit skepticle about them anyways, though I do use one on my 200….

The Swivel-Eze Lock & Stow is a good one.

I had a 60 hp Yammie on the back of my boat for many, many years, trim it all the way up, flip the motor lock tab down and then trim til secure, never had an issue traveling for up to 4 hours at a time. Lucky? maybe but they wouldn’t be there if they weren’t meant to be used.

X2. I had a Lund Tyee with a 115 Yamaha 2 stroke (approx 400#). For 18 years that how we trailered it, a lot of long distances as well. With the trim lock tab. Sold it earlier this year and it was still 100%.
