I have a great pair of general sunglasses but they do not seem to work that well for sight fishing ( I know you walleye guys are saying “whats sight fishing” ) Just curious what all you sight fishing experts here use. interested in what Brand as well as Len’s color has worked best for you. Thanks in advance for all of your responses.

I have a pair of Costa Del Mar Phantoms with the Amber colored lens that work great and after reading your customer service post…I will give them an additional

Glass lenses are heavier, but are pretty scratch resistant compared to plastic.
Polarized amber lens hands down for sight fishing.

March 24, 2010 at 4:30 pm #856830I have always had the best luck with Amber lenses and I currently have Costa’s but I used to have a pair of Sea Strikers, cheap ones from Fleet Farm, as long as they have been amber I have been happy

I have the phatoms as well but in the blue Mirrored lens. They are great overall glasses but was currious if another lens color would be a better choice for sightfishing. If so I’ll get another pair of Costa Del Mars.
jkskeetPosts: 35March 24, 2010 at 4:34 pm #856832The green mirror which is either the amber base(400 lens) or copper base(580 lens) is what everyone i know uses for sight fishing.
March 24, 2010 at 5:02 pm #856849I have had Costa Del Mar in the past and they are nice glasses. But, I got a good deal on some Native glasses two years ago and really like them. They are light, but have been durable. The nice thing for sight fishing is the interchangeable lenses. I have a dark lense and two different amber so I’m set for most any condition.
You couldn’t go wrong with the Costa’s, but just another option.

Thanks. I looked thru their site and could not locate this Info. From what I see either the Silver Mirror or the Green Mirrored lenses would be best for sight fishing. Noticed others have had good luck with the Green but would like to hear from someone who has tried the Silver Mirrored. from what I see the Blue mirrored was not the best choice. Oh well guess I’ll just have to order a new pair

March 24, 2010 at 6:11 pm #856880I like the Solar Bat Pana’s with the mossback color lense. Great for site fishing.
March 24, 2010 at 7:25 pm #856912As others have said, I prefer an amber lens. Seems to have the best contrast for me. Polarizaion is polarization. A lens can have a better polarization than the other. The money is spent on comfort and materials. I opt for something towards the cheaper end. If it fits good, is polarized, and amber, I’d wear it!
March 24, 2010 at 11:38 pm #856979Ocean Wave Backwater Green or H3O’s for me. Sight fishing is our thing here with our blue water gin clear lakes.
March 24, 2010 at 11:56 pm #856983I have had a pair of Costa Wave Killers for eight years. Wouldn’t use anything else and after eight years I have yet to scratch them or have any problems at all.

I agree with Jason
I love my Solar BatsMarch 25, 2010 at 3:57 am #857088I picked up a pair of Costa’s after Lasik eye surgery back in ’99 to celebrate no need for prescription sunglasses lenses. They have served me very well (including the lifetime guarantee).
The knot tying and fine print exercises are getting more difficult since that date & time and when I had my eye exam a few weeks ago I was ‘introduced’ to a pair of Maui Jim ‘Reader’s’. I got the amber lens this time around and love them…

no dis-respect but not all polarized are the same. When you use a pair of costas for example vs other amber lenses it is a major difference. Even side by side the costas shine above others i’ve tried. I used to think the same as you before i looked through some costa glass lenses. maybe a buddy has some you can borrow and you’ll see for yourself..

I’m just speaking from a scientific/technical viewpoint. When comparing lenses, one can’t be more polarized than another. Sunglass vendors will try to “upgrade” you to a more polarized lens, and it simply can’t happen. Lenses might appear better when compared side-by-side, but it isn’t because of better polarization. It typically is from curvature, material, buffing, etc. I’ve fished with my buddy’s glasses that he uses for trout fishing out West. They are nice, but not worth $400.00 in my opinion. I’ll stick with my $20.00 ones from Sam’s Club.
And, no disrespect taken. Healthy discussion is…well, healthy! Have a good one. I hope to hit the water this weekend.whittsendPosts: 2389March 25, 2010 at 3:45 pm #857216Prior to using the Costas, I used cheapy Target/Walmart polarized plastic amber lenses. They were sufficient until they started scratching or broke, which was usually within a month or two. Good news about those is that they were always under $20 and you could buy two or 3 to keep in the car, house, boat without feeling too guilty.
Definately amber/copper/even lighter yellowish shades over grey though. Grey blocks light fine, but the ambers and yellows really make details “pop”.

So if I order Green mirror Costa lenses they will be Amber for sure?
whittsendPosts: 2389March 25, 2010 at 5:51 pm #857260I used the term amber generically… I believe they are actually “copper” in the 580… But I’m not sure if I’d know the difference between copper and amber without being told…..
“Green Mirror (Amber Base in 400 and Copper base in 580):
Encapsulated mirrors offer enhanced visual acuity for fishing inshore, flats, rivers and streams.
Available in 400 and 580. “http://www.costadelmar.com/SeeOutThere/Technology/PureLensPerfection/
