So what is the “oil” they use to fill the Teleflex hydraulic steering for my outboard? Is it ATF or something else?

    Teleflex webpage says:

    SeaStar Oil (1 quart mil spec H5606) – 2 per kit HA5430

    Where do I get that?

You will want to make sure you get the Sea Star oil. DO NOT use tansmission fluid. I found out the hard way on my last boat. The original dealer used tranny fluid and it eats the seals out. It leaked all over and I nearly was thrown out of my boat because the steering wasn’t working properly. Transmission fluid could be used in an emergency situation like being miles off shore and you have no steering. The problem is that transmission fluid has friction additives in it. The Sea Star fluid is expensive but replacing the seals and flushing the hydrolic steering system is a pain in the neck.

Ben is right on and you usually don’t need that much, so just get the Sea Star. Most well stocked marine dealers will have it. If you’ve leaked that much out, check your seals first. Don’t waste the sea star….
