I am trying to plan a trip to the BWCA, we are staying at the Fall Lake Campground. I am trying to figure out if we need a permit for our boat. I have a 9.9 outboard and have read that on part of the lake you need a permit and the other part you do not need it. I am having trouble trying to figure out where to obtain this permit. If anyone has any experience with this please let me know what to do.
    Thanks

Its been a while but boats were only allowed on Moose and part of Fall lake… maybe Newton by now?

If you are just staying on Fall the campground should have day use permits for you to purchase. If you are heading to Basswood I would reserve a permit. I believe only a small portion of Fall lake is permit required.

The BWCA border goes thru Fall lake, the NE portion is BWCA. There is a 25 HP motor restriction. Overnight stays require an overnight camping permit, motor or paddle specified. Same for day use permits. There is a 25 hp motorized route to the north via Newton Lake 2 portages to Basswood Lake. Those portages are not serviced so you need to carry or use your own portage wheel system to get your boat/motor across. Motorized permits can be scarce this late, they start issuing for the season in January.
