Any special rules about placing small minnow traps? I believe they must identify the owner. What types of bait work best?

Forgot to say – bread mashed into a ball works for bait.

Does bait make that much of a difference? We do well trapping in a stream and a lake without using any bait.

I know a guy who used to trap his minnows. He’d hang a ladies nylon sock with cornmeal and wheat bread mix made into doughball and then let it hang in the current, He wouldn’t let it sit on the bottom. He said he got more minnows and shiners with the basket suspended, He used the one that was about 2 1/2 ft long and had a funnel on both ends that was made of galvanized fine rabbit cage wire. The one that breaks open in the middle and folds open in half on the hindged side.
