I’m looking for a hand held GPS in the $130 range. I’ve been looking at the Garmin eTrex Venture HC on Amazon for $125+shipping. Your thoughts?

I know it’s twice your shopping price, but Matt Grow has an H2Oc for sale in the classifieds. I’ve had one of those units, and they are sweet. Right now I’m running an Ifinder Expedition C. That’s a little better unit. The only reason I have Expedition C, is someone stole my H2Oc.

The screen is a great size for reading and it handles the Lakemaster ProMaps with absolutely no issues.

    Good luck with your search.

save your money, and get an H20c, i’ve seen some ads lately for cabelas and other places, selling them for around 200.

the h20c’s are coming down in price especially now that there is a new design. at the cabela’s event this weekend they had the h20c for like $170 i think. They went quick for that price but it tells you that prices are dropping. the h20c is a great unit especially with the lakemaster chip…

That depends on how long & hard you’re willing to look. I bought my MN & WI chips off Ebay for $85 each. I waited a while for each of them & the patience paid off.

Do some digging, and you should do well.

teedsman, What options do you hope to have on your GPS? Do you plan to run lake maps on it or do you just need to plot trails and points?

As some have pointed out, the Lowrance H2OC is on closeout at Cabelas for $169. That would be a good choice.

Garmin unit has some of the best accuracy out there but they are not compatible with all the map options that some other units can run. It all depends on what you plan to get out of your GPS. If you want depth contours on the GPS you’ll either have to get a unit that has lake maps preloaded (like the Garmin Colorado 400i) or you will need to make sure the GPS will accept lake map cards. The Garmin eTrex Venture HC does not have preloaded depth contours and does not accept data cards/map cards, making it a little more limited than most of us would prefer. Again, depending on what you want to do with the GPS you might want to check some other options.

Thanks for all the advise. It sounds like the H2Oc is the best bet since I want to use the Lakemaster chips.

That would work. Some Garmin units also accept the Garmin Lakemaster chip. You just have to make sure the unit you get accepts the Lakemaster Data Cards.
