I am looking to buy my first Baitcasting set up. I have used them in the past but have always been a spin cast guy. I am looking at the new Shimano, Corado 200 reel or the Abu Garcia, Revo SX series. They seem to have good reviews and are in my price range. Also, what are the benefits in getting a 7.0.1 gear ratio vs a lower ratio. The bottom line is i want a great all purpose set up. Bass, eyes and pike. I mostly fish metro lakes. Any of your thought or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Alex

    Somnio,

I am also looking for a new reel…although I have used baitcasters for many years. I put a post up just a few days ago…and also checked out many reviews on tackletour.com

    Curado review

If the Shimano Curado is in your price range it is going to be my choice, based on the feedback I got…

The 200E7(7.0 to 1) is for buzzbaits and other tactics where a very fast retreive is needed

The 200E5(5.3 to 1) is for cranks, spinnerbaits, working swimbaits etc…Which (as IGOtone commented,)is better for me for an all round use

Hope this helps…you can also do a search here for baitcasting reels.

for an all around reel from what you mentioned, I’d go with the REVO SX in a 6.4:1 gear ratio.

WOW – Guys – before you jump into a shallow lake head first, take a good look at the Quantum line up first. The shimano 200 lines up with the Quantum Accurist PT. I know the Accurists run about $99.00 and go on sale for less. They are about 2 oz. lighter than the shimano, and built tough. I have 8 of them I use for guiding and they get beat to crap. Two of them have been used all winter for jigging trout in the harbors. I can not express enough how pleased I am with these reels at this price point. Of the 8, I had one stepped on and broke a handle (along with the rod it was attached to) Quantum took care of it and replaced the reel for me.

If I were to replace all of these today with money not meaning a thing, I would opt for the Quantum Energy PT. They run about $180.00

    Accursit feature list:
    Ceramic drag system
    Polymer-stainless hybrid PT bearings
    Easy-access lubrication port
    Right- and left-hand models
    Durable multi-coated finish
    Lightweight aluminum crank handle
    ACS™ external adjustable centrifugal braking
    Continuous Anti-Reverse™
    Titanium-coated line guide
    One-piece aluminum frame
    MaxCast™ skeletal spool
    Flippin’ switch
    Quick-release side cover

Glad to hear that Randy…as I posted on another thread, I have a pair of Quantum Tis that are pushing 20yrs old. They never failed me…are just getting worn out…kinda like me…
But the threads on IDO and reviews on TT and Bass were very favorable to the Curado. But I have not purchased anything yet.
Actually for a first baicasting rig the Bill Dance (Quantum) combo with a 7’MH rod is an incredible deal for $69.95!@ BPS.

X2 What Randy said. I was beginning to think I was the only one on here with an affinity to Quantum bait casters.

They are tough no doubt about it. I have bought both the Abus and Shimmies and both are great reel but it just seems like I get more life out of the Shimanos. I actaully picked up a couple Calyx for smallie fishing last year and have had great luck with them for a lower end reel.

Make that x4 I have 3 Accurist PTs & really like them as they have served me very well. I like the flipping switch on these models, which are seemingly getting harder to find. For the money they are hard to beat. Light weight & very smoooooth.

If your talking about the new reel design they have out, I wont likely get one until I might see true testimony from multiple actual users I might trust such as you might find on this site. An advertisement from a company or 1 individuals statement who is endorsed by that company can have a different itinerary. Heres to those who give non biased opinions such as you might see here.
