This has to do with the flood we got a couple years ago and I have to ask how big do Pike really get. Everybody’s heard stories about the big fish in every species that swim the waters but never seem to get caught…Here’s the story,,, I know a guy here in town that I’ve know since I was 14 years old, I’m now 58, he also use to be manager of Fins and Feathers sporting goods store here plus he use to be on a local trap league and has been on television here with a local sports announcer fishing the areas rivers here for smallies.
I seen Dan the other day and he told me about a northern they found in a basement of the old ZCBJ girls gym on the southeast side of town and a couple blocks off the river. He said Dan, my names also Dan, he said did you hear about that 42 pound northern they found in the basement there, I said no. He said yes they did and I said are you kidding and he said no, they did find this huge northern there. I had to leave and couldn’t ask anymore questions and If I see him again soon I will.
Tim another friend of mine who was fishing the backwaters next to the Cedar River here in town said he caught a northern last year that he said went 5 feet long. Up until the time I heard from Dan tell me about that northern I thought Tim just had big fish eyes and was maybe 3 feet long and not the 5 he said it was. Tim said he pulled it up on the bank because his net was too small and the fish threw the Mepps spinner so he jumped on it and it still got away and slid back into the water. He was using my catfish rod and reel I use for flat heads and re-spooled it with 30 pound line, I had 45 on it, because he was catching quiet a few big pike that week in the same spot and didn’t want to loose anymore so he went to bigger line, bigger then his spinning rods. Tim has seen his share of nice pike but one 5′ long and Dans report of that 42 pound northern, it really makes a guy think if it is possible because we hear of those solitary big fish in each species, what do you guys think? Think its possible?
I did see a huge walleye about 15 years ago here on the south side of town at the mouth of a local creek. I waded out to the mouth where the sand ledge was and fell into deeper water into the river. When I waded in the water I knew right away it was too warm to hold walleyes and I think smallies too but I still waded out to the mouth right on the river. I was standing there watching the water clearity move back and forth, the clean creek water would move back and forth revealing the drop off and what it might hold there in fish. I was watching the water move when this huge walleye came into the warmer creek water for a few seconds then moved back out into the cooler water of the river and it was gone. I got a good look at it and I remember seeing the size of it and it didn’t fit into the realm of other big walleyes I’ve seen, it was much bigger.
Too tell you how big this walleye was, well its bigger then any walleye I’ve even seen anywhere and was several pounds bigger then any 12 to 14 lb’er I’ve seen on any wall and to make an eye size comparison, its eyes were the size of a Susan B Anthony silver dollar. It was pounds bigger then anything I’ve ever seen so I know without a doubt there’s huge walleyes around. I know there’s big fish around that are rarely caught and very rarely seen, What do you guys think, think its possible?
