Is your RI sliding up or down

I’m really trying to keep my fishing paraphernalia to what I use…not to a minimum, but to what I use.

I clean out my tackle box every other year of the goofy stuff I bought or someone gave to me that doesn’t work…stuff like the stick bait with the lighted eyes, the plasitic boobies on a hook. I just deal with that stuff.

A few years ago I built a rod rack below the rafters in the garage to hold my rods. I made 6 extra spots because I knew I would collect an extra one here or there and wanted a place for them.

Well, Dad died and I have a hard time parting with 6 of his rods so that filled out my rack. Over the last couple years I’ve had to add on because I’ve ended up collecting more.

I’m happy with an RI (Rod Index) of 10. The 4 St Croix Flathead Rods, 4 St. Croix Sturgeon/Channel Cat rods and one of each spares….10. With Dads’ 6 I’m good with 16.

Last night I took a recount of the RI.

    16 from above

    4 ice rods with reels

6 ice sticks…the old ones without reels

3 spinning rods (I’m not sure whatthey are used for or how I acquired them)

2 down rigging rods from an uncle that passed away

2 light bait casters (one has a huge birds nest in it)

    and

2 bank fishing poles (they extend to about 13 feet)

    How I got to an RI of 35 I haven’t a clue, but I think it’s time I post a classified.

OR should my Rod Index match my age?

If the fiance comes to me and asks, “If BK doesn’t need that many rods, why do you?” I’m coming looking for you BK. It took me a long time for her to understand that I needed this stuff vs. wanted it.

My RI has been increasing, but hopefully it’ll be stable for a little while.

Since you only have an RI of 35, keep on collecting. Reaching your RI age might be a daunting task. Always keep an eye on the IDO classifieds. When you are not guiding or fishing or doing honey do’s, visit some garage sales. Never give up you’ll get that RI to match your age.

I would like to buy the lure with boobies for Bob, his very large collection of di#% lures is getting lonely.

You’ll need to figure that out by March 21…unless you can work blades with a Cat rod?

I clean the rod rack every winter and sell rods that I didn’t absolutely fall in LOVE with…an expensive habit but it seems either Dean or St. Croix comes up with a new “must have” every damn spring…

I stopped counting with a RI of 37 in 2000.
Some steel and bamboo rods keep entering the collection too. Why? I don’t know. It just happens.

Actually my RI was much higher a few years back.Seems like I had a dog from every town. I opted to clean house & start over with xtremes and actually cut my RI in half.

I know I have 14 FLY rods alone. I don’t think I want to count the other rods.

BK I only just the one white rod, is that OK?

I think I’m around 29 or 30. I try to only keep rods that I use. If they go for two years without being used, they typically get given to a buddy with kids so they can be used by somebody.

You guys really use that many? I’ve got 16 and I figured that’s good for what I need (I use them all). I guess I could use a couple low end rods for buddies who come along and don’t have any.

When I had kids my RI really started to climb because they had to have their own rods. I will have to review the inventory to see who has what around the garage. I know there are a lot and my wife gives me grief but at least she knows I don’t have as many as my brothers which helps me a little

Yes. I use them all. Lead core rods, planer board rods, long line rods, rigging / dragging rods, jig rods, slip bobber rods, crankbait rods ……….

Each has its purpose. Could I double duty some? Sure, but then I wouldn’t have nearly as much stuff to play with.

So what percentage of your RI has actually seen water in the last 24 months?????

I’m probably close to 30 as well, but I usually use my favorite 2 or 3 setups 90% of the time. The rest are for family and friends.

I have a large assortment of downrigger & dipsy rods/reels that really should find a new home as I don’t get over to Lake Michigan anymore ……

One on the few things I’ve learn by having different rods to try off of the dock at Everts is the difference in rods.

I could use my flathead rods for sturgeon fishing, but I believe the sturgeon rod I use help me catch more fish.

I aways thought that a person can use a pitching rod for vertical jigging and they can, but when the bite is light, a rod that’s designed for vertical jigging will actually put more fish in the boat.

I watch River Rat Randy head out for a day of fishing and it looks like he has a sporting goods store rod rack in his boat. Every rod has a purpose.

I didnt know there was such a thing as having too much fishing stuff! Is a # like 90 too many? Why a guy can get into all this technique specific stuff is beyond me.Which might get used a few hours a handfull times a year.Instead of trying to pull more double duty. I think this is a loaded question! I would rather like to think Im possibly investing in my childrens future of fishing. Now I need to rethink my idea of the 6+ I was looking to add. The possibility of elimination of a couple.

PS Dean? That rod that’s broken in the rod rack??? It just fell in half.

BTW I like those stainless steel guides. They don’t bend or break.

White Tip, just make sure you leave your kids rods they can use.

My dad left me bait catching rods.

I bet there are a few guys on this site that could build you one heck of a shed/garage then you could just sit back and watch your RI grow.
