Today I went to check on my boat in storage and dream of some open water. While i was out there I noticed a couple of really small rust spots starting to show… What is the best way to take care this. Sand it down and paint over or are there other better ways?

Go fishing more so you are preocupied.

Its enevitable, its gunna happen. Espicially if you fish P4 in the winter/spring. If you start spot treating it the paint will probly not match and it will be blochey anyway. Why not just use the boat more then the trailer will match all the others on the road. But seriousley, crying over spilled milk, it will be an ongoing problem and my vote is to fish to forget.-Mark

I would rather see unmatched paint that the rust. I do the spot repairs when I can. I have even been known to launch the boat and fish for an hour waiting for the trailer to dry and then sand and prime, fish for another hour, and go back and paint, then fish again .

Yes, it’s gonna happen especially when you trailer your boat while there is salt on the roads but dealing with it when you have time will keep it from getting out of hand.

Yep, those painted trailers look real pretty on the show-room floor, but experience has taught me to order nothing but galvanized from now on. I’ve been in your shoes and tried to do the touch-up deal, but frankly it got old. As soon as one spot was looking good another spot showed up. You can take big strides towards eliminating rocks by buying a tow-techtor and mudflaps, but rust on a painted trailer is inevitable. Some guys suggest sandblasting and spraying bedliner type material on the entire trailer, but by the time you do that you’d be further ahead to trade, sell, or upgrade your trailer to a galvanized.

About 5 years ago I had noticed some small rust spots on my trailer. That winter I had time so I sanded down the bottom half of it and painted it with rhino liner. After that no more chips or rust.
