Did anyone read that in the Star Tib yesterday? It was an article on the Red Lake Fisheries. Its advertised as “the nations only hook and line walleye commercial fishery.” It goes on to say that “in their high volume winter season, 300 people ice fish for an average of 10,000 pounds of walleye a day;”in the summer , between 30 to 50 people fish from boats and bring in about 2000 pounds a day”.

Are those numbers right? 300 people catching 33 pounds of walleye a day through the ice?

Not any more. I believe I read in the Outdoor news a few weeks back that they are now starting or have started, not sure yet, but commercial netting on Red.

Not sure about the numbers you have stated, my search found an older star tribune article that discussed quantity in a more general way, but gives an estimate for non-band anglers which would come from Upper Read Lake only.

“Since walleye fishing was reopened there in 2006, nonband anglers have caught 3 million walleyes and harvested 1.1 million pounds.”

That would work out to 4 years @ 753 lbs per day, which if one considered the average fish taken to be 2.5 lbs, would be ~300 fish per day.

I am curious how they come up with these estimates, but expect they have reasonable auditing techniques…

And that there is why I don’t read the Star Tribune. Nothing but liberal dribble. I had to read the numbers about 4 times and they have to be talking about the numbers tribal members are taking.

I’ve never heard of anyone taking 30 – 40 lbs per day per person with a SINGLE hook and line from Red Lake (except maybe those poachers from Wisconsin) .
