Well once again this years trip went off without a hitch. A special thanks goes out to Cal S for letting us take the LX5 up for a test drive. What a great machine. The weather again this year was spectacular clear blue sunny skies and a big storm approaching for late in the day Saturday.
Friday found us set up about a mile out from the resort. Fishing this day was not as fast and furious as we would have liked. We did manage 4 walleyes and six saugers in the bucket for the day along with 25 jumbo perch all ranging from 11 inches to one that was a little over 16.
The highlight for the day was my little guy at 8 years old fought the fish in the picture below from start to finish managing his own drag and everything. Once again he collected the $100 for the big fish pool with his new personal best of 29 inches and just under 20 inces around.
After Garrett landed his 26.5 incher last year we decided to have the bomber driver drill us a couple holes outside the house for realeasing bigger fish away from all the lines in the water. After sone good measurements and some nice pics this big girl went straight down to fight another day. Artistic Anglers here we come for another replica. Great job Garrett. By the way we did manage to get the whole battle on video. I am just waiting to get it sent to me from the guys in Duluth. I will post it later.
Saturday was a completely different day. Today we were 4 miles out fishing a reef with an impending 6-8 inches of snow on the way. The fish had their feedbags on and after a small fish to start by the doctor. We erd the rest of the day with counless double’s and even 3 triple’s. We ended the day 5 fish short of our walleye and sauger limit for 6. We could have limited out but made a pact that all walleye harvested had to be over 16 inches and all saugers had to be over 13 inches. We took home 20 walleyes and 23 saugers. Our bonus fish were the 35 jumbo perch and the 4 kicker burbot to round out another great trip. What was really weird this year was about 90% of our bigger bucket fish were all caught on a plain red hook with a split shot under a bobber in 28 to 30 feet of water. As far an jigging baits went anything gold or white glow produced with a minnow head.
I really enjoy the time I spend every year with my son on the ice. If you could have seen his eyes when I got that big one in my hands, it was priceless.
