Somebody (like OtterBox) needs to make a waterproof case for IPad with a boat mount/12 volt power mount so we can replace the $2000 GPS units on the market with a $500 IPad. .

How about throwing in USB plugged transducers too.

I heard that one news person thought the I-Pad was a female hygiene product. Apple probably could have come up with a better name.

Well.. it is a newsperson… I would think something like eye patch maybe, but seeing how it’s put out by APPLE, I pretty much figured out what it was by name. Who was the newsperson… Andy Rooney ???

I would be very, very scared if I were Humminbird, Lawrance, Garmin, etc…..Plus, Apple controls the entire distribution of their products to the end consumer.

Kind of like the Droid putting a scare into TomTom and Garmin with the built in navigation system? Too bad it isn’t a Microsoft product, oerwise I would jump all over developing something. I am pretty sure this isn’t the last touch tablet we are going to see on the market though. Come on MS, get on it. Actually, PC manufacturers get on it. I know they have touchscreen out there, but they need to lose the physical keyboard.

I predict interesting things in the near future for marine electronics.

I should probably Google before replying. Apparently there are touch screen marine electronics available, but they are spendy and meant for Ocean fishing from what I have seen.

This is for all of you guys that are technologically illiterate.
I’m pretty sure that Garmin and all the other GPS manufacturers aren’t losing any sleep over your little revelation regarding making a waterproof case for iPad holder/making expensive GPS’s obsolete because I’m pretty sure you geniuses haven’t figured out how to make your iPad pick up satellite signals. My iPad only picks up 3G and WIFI and I’m certain yours isn’t any different.
Once your more than 10 ft from a Starbucks or a few hundred yards offshore you aren’t going to be receiving WIFI or 3G.
I was about to let you morons squirm and scratch your chins when you became lost once you got more than a mile off shore and your map freezes because it isn’t getting a signal any longer – but I couldn’t stand idly by, letting the coast guard deal with your (collective) ignorance.
I hope your mother’s are still alive…they aren’t finished with you.

This post is quite old, probably a floater but I am also keen to find such a contraption for my iPad.

I understand where your thinking comes from, your moniker should be BrownMatters. Smug; Supercilious; Yet so asinine.

iPad wifi only cannot receive GPS signals.

iPad wifi + 3G can receive GPS signals. For $120 more, 3G and an independent GPS are included. Two excellent marine navigation apps are Navionics and INavx. All data is loaded onto the device so a GPS fix is all that is required, no Internet needed. It works very well, I’ve used it in Panama (the country, not Florida). Certainly no wifi there, a bit further than 10 ft from the nearest starbbucks. Will post if I find anything that is suitable.

My iPad goes on the water with me every time I leave the pier. It and my iPhone are my backup nav devices, and since the iPad’s GPS resolution is generally good to within 10-20 FEET, it is actually often more accurate than the GPS in my Lowrance. I also use the Google Maps app over 3G to hunt down likely spots to find fish.

I even used the Google Maps app on my iPhone in the boat with BK once last year to find a wing dam he wanted to avoid but couldn’t find by eye.

They’re weather-proof enough that typical weather isn’t goint to hurt them and if it’s actually raining I just put it in one of the rubbermaid tubs on the boat.
