some guys dont mark them because they will get tampered with or stolen. Even nets set by the DNR with huge orange buoys with a large MN DNR sticker get pulled up and messed with.

I was working for the DNR running fyke nets one time down by Wabasha and our random sampling point put us on one of the islands that was piled high with sand from dredging, making a nice sand beach. Anyway, there was a pleasure craft down the beach about 75 yards with two guys and a woman enjoying the day, watching us set this net. Well we set the net and immediately when we pulled away the two yahoo’s come over to it and start to pull it in.

Saying that I dont know what the laws are about visually marking your nets. I know they have to be tagged for identification purposes.

Did the DNR ticket them? It’s illegal to tamper with the nets, isn’t it?

this was with DNR fisheries, we could have called the CO’s but just threw on a DNR hat and sped over there pretty quick and told them they better not touch it again. They got the picture and we reset the net. The next day when we came back to run the fish it was fine. No harm no foul.

And if I see anyone tampering with someone’s gear, marked or not, I’m handing out a can of whoop Then calling T.I.P.

That is just plain destruction of private property and such a person better be ready to deal with the consequences whether you agree or disagree with the operation. Just something to keep in mind if anyone is tampering with someone’s stuff

“What I am understanding is that this was posted to be veiwed as a reported fish kill. Only problem is when this went public before the investigation could take place it allowed for the commercial fisherman to hear the rumors and pull all their nets. If there was any illegal activity this tape being made public really hampered law enforcements efforts, as they found out when they showed up.”

Booner, are you implying these commericial fisherman were not following the letter of the law??? If what you say is true, and I do not wish to take anyone out of context-so correct me if I am wrong, but there is no reason for any commerical fisherman to pull nets nor stop an operation if nothing is being done wrong. Those guys were pulling out tons of fish and surely making money–so, if they quit-why did they quit?????
I am sure Ted is getting a good laugh about being dragged into a pool 4 commerical netting operation thread.
