Got a quick question for any of you truck mech.

    99 chev silverado 5.3L push button 4wd.

Started my truck this morning and my service 4wd light came on. It was not on last night when I parked it and hasnt been on at all within years. I had to run some errands (not to far) so I had to drive it. It locked itself into 4wd by the way. Got back from my errands checked all the wires that I could see, nothing appearent to me. Pulled out the fuse to check it, still good, and put it back in. Started it back up, no light and in 2wd?????? Went to leave about an hour later, and started the truck up, and the light came back on. So I pulled the fuse, and put it back it. Started the truck back up and light was still on, and locked into 4wd. Drove SLOWLY across town. Shut the truck off, pulled the fuse, put it back in, started the truck. NO light and in 2wd????? Left it sit for about 4 hours, pulled the fuse before i started it and put it back in. Turned the truck on, and light was on. Drove back home (in 4wd) left the truck running, pulled the fuse, put it back in, and the light turned off and was back into 2wd.

ANYONE have any clue what could be going on?? Does pulling the fuse reset something?? Maybe a loose wire somewhere????
This one has me stumped right now???

    Any help would be great

Eric, had the same problem with mine a few years back.had to go to GM and bite the bullet and buy the new 4wd switch in the dash. Not cheap and not all that fun to install, especially when your not much of a mechanic, but it took care of the problem.Good luck

I agree ,sounds like the switch.

Most auto parts stores sell/carry those switches and are just as good as the factory ones.

I too had same problem with my 99 chevy and it was the switch. I dont recall if my truck was under warranty or if it was a recall because I didnt have to pay for the repair.

Eric, had a similar problem a few months ago. I parked my truck and went in the house. Came back out the next morning and the light was on, truck in 2WD, and the switch would not respond.

My mechanic tried an extra switch he had laying around, he tried an extra actuator he had laying around. Neither worked. He found a faulty ground wire on the chassis. A little grinding and some electrode gel and we were back in business.

Unfortunately it could be a lot of things. Those were the 3 my mechanic thought. Thankfully he’s not shady and wanted to charge me for a new actuator and a new switch.

    Good luck.

I have had this problem on all 3 of my Z-71s. If you are the original owner, you might get the repair for free. They never had a recall because they do not deem this a safety issue, but did have a similar program. My current truck just started acting up, usually when it is really wet or the air is very moist. Pain in the neck. Good luck. I believe the switch is between $200 and $300.

Just fixed a similar issue on my 04 Tahoe. I had to replace the sensor on the front transfer case. $120 for the part and $200 for labor….ouch!

Mine did that once, pulled over, shut the truck off and restarted, everything has worked fine since. That was two years ago.

Would be willing to bet it is switch,I replaced mine was 89 $ at gm dealer is fairly easy to install. If you know that the dash piece just pops off with a good pull.
