I went to Devils Lake last year and had a grat time but something hapened to my reservations for this year so I am looking for a new place to go. I am still trying to find somewhere on DL to stay but am also open to different options. One thing I was looking at was Leech Lake, they have several openings the time I want to go. My question is will I be able to get into the Walleyes on Leech enough to keep the wife interested (keep in mind that I’m not a very good fisherman). That’s what I like about DL, even I can put a leech on a slip bober and keep the wife and in-laws catching fish. How busy does Leech get in the summer, DL seemed pretty quiet when we were there. Just looking for input/advice. Thanks

Early june leech would be great, if you can hit the first week in June that would be even better. Mid june is right in the trasition time of the year and you will find fish everywhere as they are dispersing form their spring huants where they have been putting on the feed bag. Fish everywhere is good for a guy who can adapt and find these moving schools, but for the average guy the first 2 weeks of June are great, if you can get a jig and shiner to the bottem in ten or less ft you WILL catch fish, good luck

I know just what you mean, to quote my favorite wife, “I love it here at Devil’s lake, even I can catch fish.”

If camping is an option the State Park on Grahm’s Island is a first rate facility. Clean bathrooms (they call them comfort stations), a remarkable open air fish cleaning station, spacious mowed primitive or modern campsites and a 4 ramp launch. No on the water overnight boat storage so launch & land every day.

In Minnesota for the less experienced, IMO hands down it’s Upper Red Lake. In the early season locating fish is a simple as driving out anywhere on the south or east side until your depth sounder shows a drop from 4 to 9 fow. Fish along this break, you will notice 90% of the boats are already on this break. You can put a 1/2 oz. simker on your wifes rig to be sure she is on the bottom and slow troll a Lindy Rig with a minnow for hours in that shallow water w/o getting snagged. Or just anchor on that break line and cast a jig & minnow. Last two years this lake has produced unbelievable walleye numbers in the 14 to 21″ range. The down side is a strong wind can mean you drive that distance and never get out like the 3rd weekend in June last year. Also there are very few resorts.

We have been staying on Sand Lake, north of Winnibigoshish, for several years. The fishing has been great in early June every year. Last year we had several 75 plus fish days and every day was over 50 fish. I agree that Upper Red Lake would be great, but if your wife doesn’t like rough water, you could be in trouble. If the wind is out of the west, it gets rocking pretty fast.
