And we think we have boating hazards

“As in any boating, you’ve got to look and understand where things were at,” he said. “There’s obstructions under the water that are not always visible. Whether it be wreckage from vessels, oyster reefs, sandbars.”

I don’t care.. Call me the reason what’s wrong with the world today but if that were my dad, brother or son I would be sueing everybody and anybody associated with this historical site. If you want it there, and it’s not natural, you need to mark it! And make sure it stays marked!

Ok. I’ll bite. If he hit a tree, you going to sue Weyerhauser because they probably planted it before it fell in the river? If you hit a wingdam on the river are you going to sue the corps of engineers? Wing dams aren’t natural, and aren’t marked. Does that mean you should get to sue somebody because YOU drove your boat into one and died? Somebody died. Yes it is a shame. Is it the fault of somebody being negligent? Sure. The guy driving the boat. A lawsuit like that is right up there with suing McDonald’s because you spilled hot coffee on your and believe it is McDonald’s fault because the coffee was hot.

K, I’ll bite back. I was exaggerating to prove my point. Things like wingdams that are necessary are different, trees, c’mon. My point was something that DOESN’T need to be there and is a KNOWN concealed piece of garbage should be marked and marked well.

Was it his fault? Sure, he was driving the boat. But I put the blame on this not being marked. Would you agree that if this garbage was marked he would have had a better chance of waking up the next day?

My point is that the guy driving the boat is responsible for what he hits. Underwater hazards are a known risk in boating. Should a sunken boat be marked? Sure, I’ll agree that it should. Without knowing what the river is like, I can’t say whether that is feasible or not. Maybe the water rises 20 feet every spring and wipes everything out. I don’t know. It is unfortunate that somebody died, but just because somebody dies doesn’t mean somebody should get sued. The ship has been there for 125 years or so. The only person at fault is the guy that was driving the boat. His negligence caused the accident. He hit something and wasn’t wearing a life jacket. The only person that I could see suing would be the confederates, and they’re gone and their money isn’t worth anything anyway.

Would you sue the Confederates for leaving the wreck?

No such thing as personal responsibility anymore.

Please don’t sue me for saying that…

Again, My point is get the S**T out of the water or mark it.. I’m sure they can mark it. They obviously know it’s there and want to protect it,,, so just mark the thing..

There are all sort of objects in the waters around here. Just out from me in the bay is what looks like an old table that shows only during low tide. On closer examination you see what looks like stainless steel ribs or angle irons sticking straight up. The locals tell me it was a sail boat that ran aground and that is all that is left of it. Heck, you should see all the pilings from abandoned piers, old oil platforms and stuff.

In Minnesota, we tend to live in a more sanitized environment, which has got its perks in the long run.

I’ll see if I can get close ups of the wreck out here when I go out looking for an old steam engine with the side scan. And yes, I mean a locomotive.

    Indianola, Tx

This place was wiped out twice in the 1800’s by hurricanes. During one they put the steam engine out on the end of the pier to hold it down I guess. Suppose it was a good idea at the time.

Else I’ll run over to Port Comfort and get pics at low tide of some stuff over there. For now, here’s a clip from a chart of about a 1/2 mile square just out from Port Lavaca where I’ve circled known wrecks.

If he had a life jacket on this might have been a no news happening.

I fished the can line on North Pepin a few times last fall.

Two green cans vanished in two consecutive weeks. These are big green buoys, probably 8 -10 feet in length??

The river moves things around. You have to be careful.
