Garage Door Cables

Seems while I was off yesterday, magically the garage door cables managed to entangle themselves and become quite a mess.

I have them unhooked and layed out straight. How do you rewind them back on the pulley and keep tension on them so they dont jump the pulley again?Do you keep the door up or down when doing this?

What kind of spring for tension?? Torsion on the pipe above the door or extension on the side stretched out?? Door up takes most of the tension off but not all.

Do you possibly have a spring that might have broke as well? The colder weather sure seems to raise heck with stuff.

Im thinking a Polish impact wrench & tractor (hydraulic lift) might not be all it takes to get you out of this 1 BK.Thus the cold weather idea.

Better look for a broken spring. Not normal for cables to jump off unless BK involved. If not broken you will need to take tension off and rewind them after putting cables back on. Simple task but can be dangerous. You need a couple pieces of pipe to wind them and some vise grips. The pulleys for the cables if undamaged need to be all the way outboard and tight to the torsion bar support brackets and bearings. Here is a great web site with info. I’ve ordered springs from them before. Fast ship and good pricing. Let me know what you find. I may need to make a road trip.

Dean, check to see that the spring isn’t broken. And be careful! I had Crawford Door (in West St. Paul) come out and fix my garage door after the torsion spring broke. The repair tech said it wasn’t unusual to stop by a guy’s house and have the customer answer the door with a bandage on his head and blood splattered all over the garage ceiling. Those springs hold a heck of a lot of energy and if it gets away from you it can get dangerous.

Be careful Dean. Even with BK having had a hand in this somehow, this doesn’t sound “normal”. A guy I used to work with received a broken arm from trying to repair a garage door himself.

Dean, My door did the same thing this weekend. I think my problem was from having the garage heated and then when Iwent to open the door, it was partially frozen down. When it jerked up, the cable came off the right side. What I did was get the door all the way down and brace it so you take some of the tension off the spring. With that done, I got on the laddder and rotated the rod with a pipe wrench that the the spring is on so that I could get the cable back on the pulley. Like everyone else said, be careful as there is a lot of pressure on the spring. With mine, I only had to rotate it about 1/2 a turn to get the cable back in place. It works good if you can brace the pipewrench against the header to hold things where you want them while you slip the cable back on. Use a screw driver or pliers on the cable just in case the wrench would slip while you have you hand under the cable. We would really hate to have to start calling you “Lefty”.

Thanks for the input guys.Sounds like I need to defer this repair to someone more qualified…why is it always so simple to break and complicated to fix?

No one seems to be answering the phone at BK’s garage door service?

My spring also broke on New Years Eve. The chain for my opener came off too. I have a guy coming by tomorrow to fix it. I’ve been parking outside since and my wifes car didn’t start yesterday. I got to replace her battery too. At least that is something I can do myself.

Don’t give up so easy Dean. They are not that complicated. They look worse and people make them sound worse than they really are. Hell you can get hurt just walking around and choke on cookies. To cold to fish may as well play with the door.

Dean if your spring is broke who ever you get to fix it will probably tell you it is a good idea to replace both of them as the second one is just as old and could go at any time, I had the same problem this summer and had them both replaced.
