I have never tried fishing the river this late in the winter. I have heard and read of folks doing so and mentioning that they take steps to plug up the livewell intake/outlets etc.

What do folks do to plug them? Just buy extra drain plugs and exercise a bit of care in terms of how much they tighten them down?

    Thanks

On my Lund Mr. Pike with 2 livewells I unscrew the screen covers on the back inlets and replace with a cap. Same as a garden hose thread. The overflows on the side of the boat get a 1.5″ expandable plumbing plug. Rubber disc between metal washers with a wing nut. As you tighten the nut the plug expands to fit. Keeps the livewells bone dry.

I basically do the same as Sgt Rock but I run RV anitifreze threw my livewell pumps and leave some in the bottom of my livewells. I have two screens setup for my livewell intakes. The one for winter which is totaly plugged with marine silicone goes on for winter. My livewell drain I use a wine bottle cork a few taps and it fits perfect. I don`t plug my overflows on the side of the boat they are high enough for me they are not an issue.

You don`t want to be missing out on some of the best fishing of the year. Get your boat ready.

Edited to add…. If you have a speedometer run by water blow the line out and plug it so you don`t bust your speedometer.

Good point on the speedometer, I hadn’t thought of that one. Thanks.
