How come is it that I spend 4 digits on tires for my 4×4 so I can have a great truck for snow and bad roads only to be stuck behind that in his little “smart” car with $50 ea. tires. Man nothing chaps me more than being behind one of these clowns.

In the past I have made it a point to stop and help ppl. stuck in the ditch but I am having second thoughts for some…

It seems that most owners of high milage cars are always bragging on their great fuel economy, well ya know what? I have decided to bragg to them that I have a truck that stays on the road and will pull them out for $20. After all, they are not helping me pay for fuel while they bragg about how great of fuel milage they get.

These slow drivers can just stay home.

Those tiny cars must be horrible when the snow gets as heavy and sloppy as it did the last couple days. My 2500 HD diesel got tossed around a little yesterday when I would hit deep patches of that slush. I would imagine those little cars would get thrown all over the place.

That is not what we need is to have someone with cheep tires trying to fly down the road. If they need to go some place I would rather they drive slow and not hit me or someone I love.

Last year I made a drive from my home near Chicago to Detroit, and took note of the 11 vehicles I saw go into or already in the ditch. Of the 11, 10 were 4×4 pickups or SUV’s, and 1 car. Now I’ll agree, great tires help a lot, but,,,,, ice can be a great equalizer. So please, whatever you drive, drive smart.

I must be one of those slow pokes cause I ussually end up with several vehicles behind me. Even with 4wd I’m in no hurry to slide or get pulled into the ditch. If more than a couple rigs are tailgating, I’ll find some place to pull off and let them get by me. I won’t tailgate anyone because it might make the other driver nervous.
    Just common courtesy I suppose.
But I’d rather be a bit late than not get there.

Common sense goes along way when the weather gets like it is now.

Someone with a great truck and good tires with a road rage brain needs an anger management class

I just hope that these kind of drivers are few and far from me

I agree with you 100%, but the cars are unnecessary. If the car companies would stop screwing us we could all be driving F350’s (obviously we would all drive Ford’s then) that got 100 miles per gallon and no one would have to worry about being unsafe in a sardine can. You wont ever catch me in one of those things. The good thing is I probably wouldn’t fit.

Good tire and common sence go a long way. My Toyota Carolla cuts throught the snow just great. We went from our place in Anoka on Weds. night to LeSueur. Then Thursday night from LeSueur to Eau Claire, Wi. And back home to Anoka on Friday night. No Problems. Although we did wait for the breaks in the weather and gave the plows a chance to do there jobs. All we saw in the ditchs where trucks though. But they where driving to fast too.

Oh yeah! I forgot. I have no problem paying a guy or gal 20 bucks to pull me out of the ditch if it ever happens. Even if I’d have to make em take it. They took the time to stop and help and 20 dollars is way cheaper than a tow truck!

    Herb, we must be related!

Just because the speed limit is 65 does not mean a person has to drive 65.

For all of you behind me yesterday on Hwy 7 going out to Hutch and back again…it really was the snow plow ahead of use by 20 cars and not me this time. I would have pulled over.

To the family in the SUV that had to pass a number of cars AND the snow plow…I hope you made it to the fire safely!

I have a 2whd pickup and a4whd tahoe you need to slow down in either of these or you’ll end up where you don’t want to be. I’ve been there before as I was with my Dad on Dec 23’1972 when my dad lost in on Ice and lost his life at 45mph in a Brand new 72GMC 3/4T 4WLD Pick up,slow is relative to condition and I have driven even a little slower since Merry Christmas And Sill alive slow is good no matter what you drive,be safe and get there alive!

    Good point.
Its all about driving to fast for the conditions, no matter what you drive, it does seem like most of the ditched vehicles are 4×4 and its because they were driving to fast.

I have a 4×4 truck and I stayed home for the worse part of the storm and waited till the roads got cleared before venturing out, been pulled out of the ditch once years back, I learned my lesson.

Didnt tend to come off as an a-hole guys, Its just really frustrating when you have sunk money into a machine to make is perform but you are limited by someone else.

Kinda like taking someone to Mountain ride in Wy and you have your 2010 154″ summit and they bring their wife who has never rode before…

Unless you had cleats, spikes or chains on your tires this past few days it dont matter what you drive or how much $$$$ you have invested into it, vehicles, speed and ice do not mix well. Take your truck onto a lake with no snow in 4WD and see if it’s slippery or not. I am guessing you’ll be sliding around. Black ice or ice over concrete and black top is just as slippery. I have 4WD and tend to drive a little bit slower an use caution when weather is at it’s extreme. In any slow drivers defense in this situation under the conditions we seen the last few days I would say “rather be safe than sorry” now if the roads were perfectly clear and it was not snowing or raining at the end of December then I could understand the

Maybe the other driver was a bit older and since his/her reaction time isn’t as fast drives slower. Someday you will get that way too unless you keep driving at your speed no matter what the weather.

And yes you did come off as an a-hole.

If someone else’s driving is adversely affecting your mood that much you might want to give up driving on public roads. It is none of anyones business how or what someone else wants to drive unless it is affecting the SAFETY of others.

God bless you for spending 4 digits for those tires. I’m so proud of you. Just think how good you will look when explaining you are 5 minutes late because you had to pass some fool who wanted to keep their family safe over the holidays. I’m sure you would have been on time to except for the damn ambulance and cops needed to cut the kids from the car.

While you maybe sorry you sounded like a a-hole (which you sure did) you would be much sorrier trying to explain to the family why you needed to kill their kids.

Might I suggest either 4 wheeling through the fields or taking a strong look at your original post and then the mirror. I’m hoping you won’t like the look of either.

    Cant resist this thread…

Having driven 100 miles (RT) to work everyday for 23 years here in a 300″ per year (annual snowfall) area in the NW Upper peninsula, east of Ashland WI. I completely agree with the premise of cautious diving…but up here where plows dont come out sometimes until the storm has passed by , and the hills are steep there are NO passenger cars I know of capable of driving through deep snow on the highways common here. Simply not enough chassis clearance, among other things.
Most families living up here have a 4WD in the garage
Living up here under the rim of the Great Lakes…a 4WD SUV or PU with tall aggressive winter tires is a must…

But having to deal with heavy traffic around the
Metro area, Milwaukee and Chicago in snowstorms, It is my experience there are usually lots of drivers going too fast for conditions…4WD, SUV or AWD Smart cars.

If we had enough Smart people would we need Smart cars?

While he may have come off as an a-hole, how fast was the little tin car going ??? I drove to the pond last night, in a Ram 2500, with a V-plow on the front. I could do 45 mph, with ALOT of confidence in my set-up. Several little cars, felt better at 25-30 mph…. now they weren’t all 80 years old, yes I did pass most of them, that didn’t turn off. Why does everybody have to bring the old “you will kill a family, with kids” into all these conversations ??? Some like WAY too much drama, brought into the threads. What is crazy to me, is driving a 4 wheel bicycle on icy, snow covered roads, but hey, thats just me.

I guess I’ll just say if your rigged to the max, go around them and don’t worry about it. You’ll make it, right?
And at the same time, don’t come on here pissing about somebody else driving at a slower speed that they feel comfortable.
You know something? Of all the threads started about drivers, I’ve yet to see one from a slower/safe driver crabbing about the guy with the bigger and wider radical tread tires throwing salty, sandy slush as he meets or gets passed by the guy in the bigger rig.
It’s not just the 18 wheelers I’m referring to.

I wasn’t pizzing about anything….??? Other than the fact, some people think, because you pass somebody, your killin’ their kids… I also think it’s kind of funny, when the little tin cars are in the ditch, they love seeing the 4×4, pulling over and throwing them a strap… Let’s face it, the little cars have their place, it just isn’t on slush/snow covered roads, in the dark, doing 20 mph, because their wheels can’t even straddle the “path” that the bigger vehicles made, jerking and swerving their little car all over. That to me, is dangerous and they are putting their lives, their kids lives & everybody else on the roads lives, on the line Your right BK, it is 5 O’ clock somewhere

My daughter, driving home from college for Christmas is driving a small car. Horrible road conditions and she was petrified. She can’t afford a $40-50,000 truck with the “right tires”. Are you suggesting she should stay put and allow only 4×4 trucks to rule the roads? I prayed that she would drive slow and get home safe. She may have inconvenienced the 4×4 trucks by 5-10 minutes, but she got home safe for Christmas. Jeepers….what’s the rush?

No offense, but I’m wondering why she was on the road at all, if she was petrified, why didn’t wait till the roads were better?

Seems you make the OP point, a driver in a vechicle they can’t drive/feel safe in.
