The FL8 is a very fine unit.I know there are better ones out there but for the price you can’t go wrong. I’ve been using the same one for at least 10 years.
December 22, 2009 at 12:05 am #825367A little more info would probably give people a better idea of what you need. I had an FL-8 that worked just fine on the backwaters of the Mississippi years ago.
December 22, 2009 at 12:11 am #825375I have had an FL8 for years and it has never let me down. I would buy the one you can afford. I use this same unit on my trolling motor in the summer. I did purchase a Marcum LX5 last spring and used it on the ice Saturday and Sunday and I like it also, but more money. My wife used my old FL8 and outfished me.
December 22, 2009 at 12:13 am #825377I had an FL8 for years and I really liked it, except for when there were several of them around. I now have an LX5.
December 22, 2009 at 2:27 am #825446This may be a minor point, but I find the Vexilar to be quite noisy compared to the Marcums. Just my $0.02.
December 22, 2009 at 2:56 am #825461If you just buy an fl-8 you will be fine at first, but if you get into ice fishing and start to do it a lot more, the fl-8 is going to leave a lot to be desired. If you plan on ice fishing some deeper water sometimes, I would get an fl-18 or marcum vx-1 pro. They both have bottom zoom, so you can zoom in on the bottom 5-6 feet of the water column and get a better view of whats down in the deep water.
December 22, 2009 at 12:48 pm #825541Thanks for your input guys. I’m going to get the fl18, now I just hope I can find one. Keep the line tight, Outback
December 22, 2009 at 1:35 pm #825560i have used an fl-18 for the last 5 years and loved it. although, but if i could do it over again, id save up for the fl-20 – it wasnt available when i purchased my 18. that oversized flat screen is pretty nice in the shack. but id definitely suggest the 18 or 20 for the bottom zoom… you wont beleive how many times you will use that handy little feature!

I got a fl-20, through a death in the family
I was wondering how to use the in the summer also with the boat, how do you have this set up.
Thanks in advance.

The easy way to do this is just to dangle the transducer over the side of the boat at the bow. Keeping the bait within the transducer cone isn’t the easiest thing to do on the river, but it’s certainly possible. Seeing how fish react to the bait is really valuable, and it certainly helped me catch more fish. Give it a try, I think you’ll be impressed.
December 22, 2009 at 2:44 pm #825588Go to about any retailer and get the summer kit. It comes with a gimble bracket, power cord and puck style ducer for mounting to your trolling motor. I did this on my old boat. Nothing like vertical jigging eyes on P4 with the flasher, reminds a guy of his days sittin on the ice.
December 22, 2009 at 3:40 pm #825615Thanks for the info guys, we will probably talk more about it once the water gets wet again here in the LaCrosse area.
I didn’t know you can attach it to your normal boat battery.
I have been using a portable LCD in my boat with a transom mount transducer plugged in and that has worked well because I can put the graph anywhere in the boat depending on what and how I am fishing.
The vex I was thinking, if I could just plug in the puck on bow mount trolling motor and just keep it in the Ice pack it is in now.Charging is not a problem, we keep the boat in the garage and can charge many things at once. Plus I would not be pulling juice from the starter battery which does make me a little nervous, Also I wouldn’t have to worry about keeping the Vex battery charged through out the non ice season.
So I can just buy the puck style to attach to the trolling motor and I should be good to go?
