I am just curious how many IDO members get the Outdoor News and wondering what you think about it?

I have been reading the Wisconsin Outdoor news (same publisher as Minnesota Outdoor News) for years and I find info there that isn’t available anywhere else. They are especially good at monitoring the DNR and the “Cuffs N Collars” is always good for a laugh.

December 18, 2009 at 6:03 pm #824493I used to buy it but will never again. Too many times I have read shotty or poor info and most times simply opinions that are presented in such ways that slander a person or area. The stick that broke the camels back was Steve Carney’s column this summer slammin Mille Lacs. Most would agree that ML has ben getting better every year and Carney basically called is the Dead Sea because he couldnt hardly buy a fish…
Publishing such articles leads to negative impacts on the local economy of resorters and services. I think we are probly all guilty of such talk but to publich for everyone to read is just horriable. Too many ppl read that Mag. and belive it to be fact.
Im gunna stop here before I say something I might regret.
But basically publishing of poor info.December 18, 2009 at 6:13 pm #824497I used to get it and enjoy it. Then they did an article about a smaller lake that we were having great luck with big gills on. After they featured it, that lakes was basically fished out in a short time. I stopped buying it after that.
I would like to know from someone who still gets it. Were those douche bags who shot at myself and another fisherman opening weekend of deer season near Red Wing in the Cuffs and Collars section?
December 18, 2009 at 6:13 pm #824498I stopped getting it as well…To me, some columnists were very opinionated, and there wasn’t a great deal of information that I was interested in.
December 18, 2009 at 6:33 pm #824504I have gotten the paper for a few years. They gave me my 1st Marcum when I sold 10 subscriptions to their paper. I hear ya on Steve Carney, that fellow there has the worst column in the paper.
December 18, 2009 at 6:34 pm #824505I enjoy it. I’m offended far fewer times by that publication than some of the posts(ers) online.
timmyPosts: 1960December 18, 2009 at 6:47 pm #824509I get it and enjoy it as well. I like reading the Steve Carney articles because they make me feel smarter……I have never seen an idiot struggle so much with mounting a transducer on a boat….or take a swig of antifreeze….. What an incompetent moron. He struggles more with day-to-day task than I can imagine…..then writes about it.

???????? How so?December 18, 2009 at 7:10 pm #824514I pull it out of the magazine rack, peek at the featured lake and place it back in the rack.
roosterrousterInactiveThe "IGH"...Posts: 2092December 18, 2009 at 8:46 pm #824536I don’t think your going to find a publication that is 100% agreeable to all…I personally enjoy the ODN’s…RR

I tell about his secret spots.
Cuffs and Collars is available on-line at the DNR’s website.
December 18, 2009 at 8:50 pm #824539The fact they allow blatant lies and slander to be printed ended me ever looking at one again.
Printed media is continuing to become a thing of the past. I wonder if any will exist in 20 years??
December 18, 2009 at 9:07 pm #824546I get it. Clancy seems 2 have good articals Plus I half 2 have some thing 2 start the wood burner with
GissertPosts: 22December 18, 2009 at 10:50 pm #824565I get it, though I no longer grab it and read it right away like I used to.
Carney grates on me, especially that last artice he did on how terrible steel shot is at killing ducks. The foolow up letters ripped him pretty good on that one.
December 19, 2009 at 12:15 am #824581I sometimes buy it to look at the photos. Then I use it to start-up the fireplace.
December 19, 2009 at 12:39 am #824589I enjoy getting the paper. I like Steve Carney’s open honesty. He has troubles like the rest of us, which is refreshing to hear. Maybe Steve over shares his opinions, such as the fishing conditions on Mille Lacs, and that may have hurt some businesses, and that should remind Steve to think first. But what it comes down to is the paper still has good and honest information.
December 19, 2009 at 12:44 am #824590I’ve been getting it for three years now. I like the articles and photos mainly. Yet, sometimes they are questionable on topics in there articles. But, I like the idea of agreeing or disagreeing with the authors…
stevenoakPosts: 1719December 19, 2009 at 2:37 am #824640I get Wisc. and Ill..lots of good articles when it first came out,a little thin sometimes now.Best was when our governor got caught stealing DNR funds{Illinois}They did a good job gutting and filleting him.Brought a lot to light to help fuel the outrage that helped get it replaced.Use to read it cover to cover. But now read 25-50%.With whats on tv I find myself reading more.Cheap enough I stick with it for now.
jldiiPosts: 2294December 19, 2009 at 4:37 pm #824742I’ve been getting it for a number of years now (my renewal is an annual Xmas present from a family member) and if not for that reason I would no longer get it.
Over the years its become more and more obvious that they are just puppets working as a mouth piece for the DNR’s agenda which in many cases is not in line with what sportsmen across this state want. They suck up to the DNR officials so they can have access to them, and to do that they basically have sold their journalistic souls to the DNR.
The paper is good for cleaning fish on though!
December 20, 2009 at 12:50 am #824794We had this same thread earlier this spring with about the same results. My oopinion is that some of the articles are good and some not so good. Lots of rewarmed over articles. I like to feel like I’m learning something.
Since the Walleye Insider went away and the In Fisherman magazine seems to be gettting thinner and thinner, is there a good magazine/paper out there for the multispecies angler addressing both soft and hard water?
December 20, 2009 at 6:22 am #824870Of course I get it. I fish and hunt so its a no-brainer.
If you met Carney in person you’d more than likely have a different opinion of him!
Great Guy and not even close to to the idiot you all are portraying him as..December 20, 2009 at 3:16 pm #824905Quote:

He is the one portraying himself as an idiot, not us. If he actually isn’t one, then he is doing a heck of an acting job.

December 21, 2009 at 3:49 am #825071I still get it….as a christmas gift every year. I try to read it when I have free time, which seems to be less and less each day.
