Struggling for ideas for my nephew, he likes to fish and is a freshman at Southwest State, is there any fishing options down there that I could parlay into a xmas gift?

try Steep Bank (Sleep Bank)by Hendricks or Dead Coon lake by Arco they both have a good walleye population and some nice Perch not much for sunfish or crappies and the pike are a pain in the when fishing the walleyes

I graduated from SMSU 3 years ago, and while I was there fishing was always hit or miss. I’ll recommend Shetek or Sarah as lakes that are usually a safe bet, but every year there is a different lake that is really good. I think they just get fished out and people move to the next. On Shetek I’ve done very well on crappies with some walleyes too. On Sarah we always targeted perch and walleyes. Cottonwood and Balaton are worth a look too. Good luck. I recommend stopping at the Varsity Pub for a Panino while you’re in town.

There are many great lakes within 30-40 miles of Marshall. Steep Bank used to be great but last year the oxygen levels got too low and the lake died out. Look to Wood Lake, Dead Coon, Lake Benton, Lake Yankton, East Twin Lake, Lake Shetek, Lake Sarah, or Cottonwood. All of these lakes produced last winter and over the summer. For current information, he can check out Kozac Bait or Borch’s Sporting Goods.
