Not completely true! There are quite a few on and off ramps to and from the left lane. I’ll drive whatever speed I deem safe when I’m in my entrance or exit lane. Don’t like me in the fast lane? Don’t design roads that have entrance and exit lanes on the left!!

You can toss all those so called “Rules” out the window driving inside the 494/694 loop. Worst roads in the country!

Also, why is it if I’m pulling a boat I MUST be passed? I can be doing 85-90 and I’ll have some idiot pass me only to slow down to 65-70! What’s up with that?

Since I drive a semi, I have to very carefull about speeding. I usually set my cruise 1 MPH below the posted speed limit, unless I’m driving between Wisconsin and Indiana thru Chicago, then its a matter of not going so slow that you become a hazard on the road. Truck speed limit is 55, and I usually go thru there 58-60, and I’m still one of the slowest vehicles on the road.

Speaking of road rage, Monday AM. Just pulled on the freeway. Guy in front of me is keeping “safe” distance to the other cars of about 50 yards. You can seem him acclerating and hitting the brakes at the same time. Stop, go, stop, go. I was not able to keep a constant speed(albeit slow) causing the slinky effect for who knows how far behind me.

I looked down to change the station on the radio, look up and he’s stopped dead. I nearly hit him. Swerved to the shoulder and went around. The gap in front of him to the next car, no less than a 100 yards. It took all my will power not stop on the interstate and rip the guy’s brake pedal out of the car.

I HATE Minnesota drivers on snow days!!!

Poor guy was probably just trying to get back to South Dakota.

And if someone gets PO they can just kiss my grits or leave early enough to be ahead of me.

That’s great, as long as you stay out of the left lane.

If I am driving safely and not speeding, I have just as much right to drive in the left land as you do. I purchase tires and fuel like anyone else I pay taxes on that fuel, which gives me the right to drive in what ever lane I want.

I love those people and you don’t have to be towing a boat to see them. Did I say people? I meant morons.

I’m sure there is a law against obstruction of traffic, I just don’t think you will get a police officer to write a ticket on someone who is driving the speed limit. What judge would enforce that?

But it is ok to do 85-90 pulling a boat.

After 2.5 million miles(with only 1 ticket and I swear to god it was a cheap shot and no chargeable accidents ) I found out that your never ever gonna make anyone happy no matter WHAT speed you drive…

But I still think that speed kills..not that I have not done it myself..

Be courteous, set you own speed, and ignore all the “gestures”and such ,otherwise you just drive yourself crazy…Unless the other driver is causing a major safety issue, then the cell phone comes into play..

Most people will not even THINK about slowing down even just a little bit though…I call it the NASCAR mentality

Myself… 5 over when conditions dictate it’s OK

Life is to short to sweat the little stuff

Yup I agree with you Jon that would be the exception to the rule, if you are getting off on an exit in the left hand lane then I have no problem with you slowing down.

Here in Rochester Hwy 52 runs from one end of town to the other, 6 lanes all the way threw town with no on or off ramps in the left lane north or south bound. The speed limit in town is 60 I can drive 70 and still have people passing me, so in that situation if you are in the left lane and holding up traffic do everyone a favor and please move over to the center lane.

Yes you are 100 percent correct you have just as much right as anyone else on the road to drive in what ever lane you want to but the point some of us are trying to make is that if you do not need to be in the left lane and you are holding up traffic behind you than why do you want to be in the left lane?

I am not sure if you are attempting to stir the pot here, or if you are serious. If you are serious, while I will agree that you have the right to drive in any lane you want, but I would say that you statement that you drive at or below the speed limit in the left lane because you want to arrive home safe to see your wife and kids would not be the safest way to travel. You are much more at risk to get into an accident traveling at a much slower rate than the rest of traffic, and that would be more so in the fast lane vs. the right lane. If you did get into an accident going slow in the fast lane and it not your fault in the laws eyes. Would that make you any less injured or dead for your family? If you were really concerned about you and your families well being you wouldn’t practice that type of driving. My guess is that you enjoy irritating people more so than your personal safety.

I hate that too that is why when I am pulling my boat I do the speed limit and stay in the right lane and let everyone pass me especially when I am driving threw the Twin Cities.

I won’t even get into all the stupid stuff I see driving a 70′ long semi down the road.

The best is when so idiot decides to pass me when I’m starting down a hill. I-94 in Wisconsin is a great example. When you are hauling 40,000 lbs. of freight you get a good bit of momentum going down hill. I’ve hit speeds of over 80 without touching the throttle. Anyway, I see it it everyday. Some bozo wants to pass me as I start to gain momentum and he ends up standing on the excelerator in order to get in front of me. Usually that is when he has to brake so he can take an exit and realizes, I’M NOT SLOWING DOWN!!

If you’ve never ridden in a semi, it’s amazing just how quiet they get when you hit high speeds. They feel like they are just floating along and all you hear is the wind, no vibrations or motor noises.

I drive fast enough to get me where I’m going. Ironically, it’s just a bit slower than the guy in the left hand lane.

I didn’t say that I drive in the left lane, I said that I have just as much right to drive in the left lane.

I do drive the speed limit when I do decide to drive in the left lane. Like earlier this past spring I was driving up to pool 4 on 35 and the right lane was rough as a cob. I accelerated to the speed limit and drove in the left lane until someone would come up behind me I would be courteous and move over to the right lane. Let them pass and move back to the left lane.

I was in a bad accident almost 30 years ago and all I want to say is that it does not take much speed to change several lives dramatically.

I find it comical that so many people are arguing about how a law abiding driver(speed limit follower) screws up a lawbreaking driver (speeder) and the lawful person is the one demonized. But let an angler kill a walleye 1/8” out of the slot and everybody is clamoring for harsh punishments – hollering about how “laws are to be followed….and if you can’t, then pay the price….” I won’t even mention how people bellyache is somebody legally kills a big fish………

    Bunch of hypocrites.

I try to drive faster than 95% of the other cars. I feel safer approaching cars than I do having them come up behind me.

Not sure if you are replying to me or not but you did click on reply to my post so I will respond. Please show me where on this site or anywhere for that matter where I have ever ridiculed anyone for keeping any size of fish or for legally killing a big fish, I have not. I realize you were probably not referring to me specifically but that is the way it came across. Also our number one rule on this site is we do not do any name calling of anyone or any group of people.

I wasn’t singling you out, Steve, it was just the post that happened to be up when I hit ‘reply’.

    Hypocrites…..yes….I stand by that.

The general consensus I see here – not just this post, but in general – is “follow all the laws not matter what and turn everyone in that makes an error – unless it is a law you like to break yourself”.

Speed limits are a law – just like slot limits, but I guess it doesn’t matter…..just follow the laws you like….

Now where is that pot-stirring smiley?

I will say Thank you if someone holds a door for me.
I will say please if I ask for something.
I will not drive in the left lane unless I am passing a person.

Just common sense and courtesy. Drive as fast as you want, I really don’t care. Please don’t crash in my area because then I have to tear your car apart and dig your body out when I could be home spending time with my family.

Since we’re all talking about rules of the road, I wanted to chime in with how nice it is when people drive with cruise control. I generally set my cruise at 5 to 8 miles per hour over the speed limit on rural hwys and freeways. When I come up on vehicles I make lane changes accordingly. Today I had a guy infront of me in the left lane fluctuating his speed between 65 and 75. I was trying to set my cruise at 70, but one minute I’m tailgaiting and the next hes a 1/4 mile ahead of me. Either let me pass or stay ahead.

While I think the term “speed kills” is a cute catch phrase, its incorrect, speed doesn’t kill, improper driving does.
All those who think they can drive anywhere or anyway they want should be required to take a good defensive driving course, its evident you haven’t.

We all could drive (driving conditions permitting) at 80 mph and remain for the most part incident free, if we all followed some basic driving skills.

They do it on the autobahn all the time, and its when someone fails to drive correctly is when almost all the incidents happen.

These are not accidents, they are preventable driving errors.

So, drive in the left lane at 45 mph all ya want, but when someone comes up on you and flashes their lights (that means they want to pass for you uneducated in driving courtesy) have the common courtesy to pull over and let them pass.

Or don’t batch when they climb up on your backside with their brights on, you both are working on a preventable driving error and you may not like the results.
    imho

Dont forget the physics behind speed though.

    Force = mass x acceleration
    Momentum = mass x velocity

The faster you are traveling, the more damage you can do. Since the mass of a car is very significant in relation to you body, each increase in speed gets you that much closer to death when there is an accident.

    Speed does kill.

Didn’t forget it, but by your reasoning we all should stay under 5mph, key here is speed does not kill, its poor driving that does, you can go a 100mph and not die, or you can run into a semi at 45 and get killed.

I see your point, but its not speed that’s causing the problems.
