I was struck by this post. Though I have no statistical proof, it seems to me that 90% of all road rage revolves around speeding. How fast do you drive?

    Northstar,
When I’m driving and shoot someone with my finger when they tick me off, I try not to let them see me. Sorry about that.

I don’t think it is speeding that causes road rage.
It’s the dumb ashes behind the wheel.

I usually drive the speed limit or as much as five miles per hour slower. Why? Because when you drive five miles an hour over the limit for one hour you only get to your destination five minutes earlier, and it is easier to leave five minutes earlier. You also gain fuel mileage by driving slower.
And if someone gets PO they can just kiss my grits or leave early enough to be ahead of me.

If you would have asked me this when I was 16-20 it would have been as fast as a beat up ford pickup could go. I had the 6 or 8 tickets to back that up now in my old age(27) I keep it + 5 of the limit

Like Tim, I used to speed a lot. Gas was a lot cheaper, and I had places to be Now that I’m a ripe, old 28, gas costs an arm and a leg, and I’m driving a big SUV with a V8, I keep it at the speed limit, especially on the freeway. No sense throwing money out the window on gas, tickets, and insurance premiums.

Thanks for the reminder. I’ll try really hard to do my makeup at home. But sometimes it seems a never ending job to look my best at all times.

I drive the speed limit or often times a couple clicks below it….and I always get a chuckle over people that fly right up and get on my bumper….tailgate for a while….then blow past all upset when they get a chance. I am following the law, they are breaking it, and then they get mad at me because I slowed them down????? Funny stuff. A smile and a nod as they pass….and I continue on my way. Often times, the next stop light puts me right next to them again……

+4 or less for me on the rural highways. In the metro, drive with the flow, whatever that may be. Monday was 5-10MPH, today on the same road it was 75MPH(interstate 94).

Speaking of road rage, Monday AM. Just pulled on the freeway. Guy in front of me is keeping “safe” distance to the other cars of about 50 yards. You can seem him acclerating and hitting the brakes at the same time. Stop, go, stop, go. I was not able to keep a constant speed(albeit slow) causing the slinky effect for who knows how far behind me.

I looked down to change the station on the radio, look up and he’s stopped dead. I nearly hit him. Swerved to the shoulder and went around. The gap in front of him to the next car, no less than a 100 yards. It took all my will power not stop on the interstate and rip the guy’s brake pedal out of the car.

I HATE Minnesota drivers on snow days!!!

    Don’t like tailgaters?
    Get out of their way.

    While I realize there’s times this isn’t possible, there’s
nothing worse than that moron driving 45 mph on I94 in the left lane blocking traffic, that’s what causes road rage.
Also add the gal/guy on the cell phone wandering over the road trying to right down that list of whatever it is.

Add make up artists who believe they can add make up, and talk on the cell phone…or read the newspaper while driving.

Might as well add the numb nuts who runs right down to the end of the on ramp and stops and then looks to see where traffic is, or enters with out looking at all.

Unfortunately the list goes on, but I doubt its the person going 5-10mph over that’s causing all the rage.

Ever had the person you were trying to pass speed up??

I agree if you are in the left lane and not passing then you are also breaking the law.

It’s called courtesy, move the heck over! It is not your job or position to play driving morality cop. Minnesotans suck at this unwritten rule of the highway. This irritates more drivers than anything else.

I used to drive too fast, too often, and had the tickets to prove it. After loosing my driving privilages (sp) a couple times while in my 20s, the light finaly came on. I attended a Defensive Driving class to help with insurance costs. They preach that the safest speed to drive in multiple lane traffic is a couple miles an hour slower than the surrounding traffic. Now before everyone hollars, this does not mean get in the left lane and slow down. They told us the best place to be was the middle lane, as you don’t have to keep making lane changes that way. Right or wrong, that’s what was taught at the class. A large part of the class was to make you aware of your surroundings, and that even though you may have the right of way, don’t just assume that it’s safe to go.

If you are doing this in the left lane then you also are breaking the law if you are not passing you need to be in the right lane. I also agree that people that do this cause the most road rage.

My mistake – I didn’t mean to imply that I drive in the left lane. My comments were directed towards driving on 2-lane rural highways. I should have spelleed it out a tad better.

If I am driving the speed limit – I sure as heck am not pulling over to let a speeder pass…….

Happen all the time and I drive alot. Will have the cruise set, move over and when I get even with the vehicle they speed up. Then if they don’t run right beside your vehicle they get in front of you and slow down again.

I started this post because the quote above was me. When I was in my early 30’s, I worked for an insurance company as a field rep. I drove about 75,000 mile per year and got bored doing it so I would drive as fast as I could get away with. I finally woke up after spending a week in North Dakota driving 100 mph. Can you imagine the fall out at work if I got picked up for doing 100 mph in the company car or caused a wreck? I had a pretty young wife, a five year old daughter a 40 acre hobby farm and a really good paying job. About all you could ask for a young guy. And I was willing to risk all that so I could be a few minutes early getting some place? I took me several months to train myself to drive the speed limit. It is a habit that is hard to break. Now, I never have to look for the cops, I’m not worried about insurance premiums and I’m a lot less likely to hit a deer or an old lady that turns left in front of me.

Slow down folks, its good for your health and your pocket book.

I simply speed for the enjoyment of driving fast. Not because I am in a hurry to get there. And I am willing to pay a few dollars extra for that pleasure now and again.

I can relate to that because I did too. I had to think about it before I quit and would really like to do it now. However, my reflexes aren’t what they were back then and it just isn’t a good idea.

Good point on reflexes and my night vision has gone to ^%#. I dont speed much at night anymore. Throw in some rain at night and I can barely make the limit…

I once had a guy stop his truck in traffic and get out to curse at me. My sin was I signaled and moved over a lane and caused him to brake a little. I had plenty of room. Ahole then goes around me without signalling and stopped in traffic to stop me and get out. I was just about to hit him with my maglight flashlight when the cops came and arrested him for warrants.

It is true, there are signs, but it is actually not against the law in Minnesota to drive slower than the speeders in the left lane. It is idiotic and dangerous, but not against the law. One of the governors tried to get it changed, I think Jesse, but the legislature would not go along with it.

Not sure, but isn’t there a law against obstruction of traffic?
