Pete and I went through about 25 gallons of gas, but we made some really long runs.

    James,
Are there any houseboats available still? We have a full houseboat if there is room. I will put the deposit in the mail next week.

    Thanks.

Rookie, as of right now we’ve got room for your group. Things have really started to fill up in the last week and we’re getting down to the last couple boats. What I’ll do is hold a full boat open for you until middle of next week to allow you time to get that deposit out to me.

Any chance you’d be willing to send me your contact info by email so we can stay in touch with each other on this? [email protected]

When you burned 25 gallons, what type of boat/engine were you running?

    Thanks!

I’m only fishing Rainy Lake during the soft water. Much of the tackle/color combinations are good for Rainy Lake, Rainy River, and LOTW. Yep…..Get in line for the Crappie run if it is going. Better be a fall harvest blend! Aaaah just feels good talking about Houseboats, Sunshine, and big fish!! Kind of looks like we are going to be locked and loaded with our IDO gang soon. My favorite trip of the year NO DOUBT!!

Pete and I were running a 16.5 Alumacraft Magnum w/ 50 horse Honda tiller. The only reason we burned as much gas as we did was because we went exploring. I would bet the we made some of the longest boat runs in the group and found fish at every stop

Those that went last year, James, Chris, et al…

Would you guys want to or be able to contribute to a list (whether in this thread or another) of tackle “necessities” for the upcoming 2010 trip?

Obiously everyone owns different tackle, different boats, fishes by many differing tactics and will approach this trip in their own way….

But if you guys were to make a list of “must have” and “not absolutely necessary, but nice to have” items, what would you add to those lists? I’m mostly interested in the tackle end of it (rods/reel outfits by application (trolling, jigging, etc..), line preference, hardbody bait styles, jigs, colors, sizes, etc…..) — but if you think of any oddball things (like food, clothing, drink, boating, etc items), that would also be handy. It would be nice to start a list now with time to accumulate/use some of these must-have items over the course of the summer prior to the trip.

I have a pretty good idea of where to start based on reports from last year, but I’m always on the lookout for ways to blow more $$

    Hey Mike,

Here is a run through on fishing must haves on Rainy Lake. GPS Mapping, or simply an incredibly keen eye in triangulating pine trees and rocks. Mininum of 150 feet of anchor rope and a sufficient digging anchor for extra holding in deeper haunts. A box full of 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 oz. jigs. Orange and Chart., Pink, Tiger Pattersn…H20 Precisions are a personal preference. Slip bobber rigs, Bottom bouncing gear. Wide variety of plastics for Walleyes, Crappies and Bass. Plugs for those chasing big pike and walleyes as an option. We will likely post a Rainy Lake Map up on our Group site again this year, in which myself and Billy will mark up to help groups out, but your own Rainy Lake Map will be nice. Rainy Lake One Stop will have them for you.

My guess would be that we might work out a similiar arrangement with one of our site sponsors (Rainy Lake One Stop) for a mass order of bait to be picked up by each group leader.

Extra Gas, and a Extra Anchor is always a good idea. Ask my buddy Andy about his Anchor. Kudos to Billy for giving him his to get him by. FYI I doubt Billy is carrying 10 anchors, so just a thought.

Grilling out food, because there is nothing better than grilling up some steaks on the front of the houseboat after a long day of fishing.

Warm clothes and summer clothes, because we’re in Ifalls!! Who knows!! LOL!!

    Boots and Sandals……Who knows.

    Leinenkugels Summer shandy……Fall harvest……….Who knows.

Ok for real!! Bait tamers to keep your minnows alive for the week are very very handy.

Digital cameras, Video recorders, and homemade venision/goose jerky always makes you a camp favorite!!

    Sleeping bags,pillows, personal food.

Just a start, but might spark an interest. Feel free to add.

Remember we’re isolated, but not on fantasy island. We are within boating distance if needing something you WILL forget. Billy from Rainy Lake Houseboats will also work with you to get something out if needed.

    So…
    1) Bring some chocolate cake or brownies. Got a very special brownie recipe that I will make an extra huge batch
    2) Someone from Chippewa Falls/Eau Claire, get a keg of Leinies correct seasonal, did I hear that right?
    3) Where was the Crappie line at?

Other questions… (mostly for Chris I guess)
    1) What kind of plastics seem to work best (ring worms, paddle tails, shad body, grubs, gulp, etc, etc)?
    2) After initial bait pick-up, how can we get more if need be?
    3) Do the houseboats have outlets handy for on-board charges or how did you do that when beaching the boat? In case, I get that new I-pilot and want to exercise the I-pilot spot-lock and track.

Paddletails, K-grubs, and Gulp all should work IF the Fall bite is on. Last year it was more of a minnow bite than anything else.

It is a 15-20 mile boat ride and then a few miles by truck, best to order more than you need. Guys that went last year can help you figure out how much bait you should need as we get closer.

Yep, just bring an extension cord
We also brought one of those multi electrical strip that got used as well.

Ron pretty much nailed it. We dealt with really a late summer bite last year, and didn’t get into a early fall pattern. People were going off the houseboat slides for crying out loud. I’m hoping for bibs, stocking caps, and Giant Walleyes this fall!! But hey thats just me!! Fall is awesome on Rainy Lake!!

    Ok…..

I’ve got a world famous chex mix recipe, some good deer sausage, potential bear jerky if I get off my and make it, and can get some of the world’s best cheese (IMO)… That should be a start…

If there is a need for it (and I don’t know why there wouldn’t be )… I could possibly bring a quarter barrel of Leinie’s Summer Shandy.. Other option is that I could whip up a few batches of homebrew and bring some of that as well/instead. Keeping a keg cold might be a chore, though if its warm out… I also make homemade wine (which is actually very good) if anyone is interested. I’d be very happy to share, I have lots….

I do actually want to get in some fishing, too, during this trip, though…

Did most people last year have the Lakemaster GPS chip or map loaded on their GPS units? I looked for a Lakemaster paper copy on the Lakemaster website and it does not appear they make one. Are there other paper copies that people used? I am trying to get the map for my handheld GPS unit but for some reason garmin is not offering CD-ROMs for the Lakemaster LOTW/Rainy.

    Thx fellas,
    Tim

The Lakemaster GPS chip for Rainy is worth its weight in gold up there. I would highly recommend it. Both to help you catch fish but also to help you navigate safely.

As for the paper map nothing is available from Lakemaster at this time.

I just got the Rainy chip for my HB…

I also have the Rainy chip for my H2Oc…. I would be willing to let someone borrow that for the trip if the other guys we are going with already have one… (not sure if they do or don’t, I’ll check)..

    Gonefishin,

My apologies for my slow reply. My travel schedule has been non-stop of late. But I have everything updated and we still have 10 openings as of 5:23 PM tuesday 3/23/10. We don’t have any more “open boats” but we do have room for a few pairs to fill out a boat.

Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll get you on the roster. My guess is we’ll have this 100% filled by the first week in April.
