I was just called and told I won a trip for 2 to Orlando and a cruise package for 4 people in the Bahamas courtesy of Amazon travel club. Everything was included except a tax of $249 per person a total of $498.00. I was expected to give a major credit card number over the phone to claim my prize or it would be passed on to the next person they draw. I questioned this and the guy on the phone Dan Sack of Amazon directed me to their website and showed me several different state business licenses and assured me this is how they identify me and my address as the winner. I didn’t give up the info and he thanked me for my time. Has anyone else heard of such a trip?? It sounded pretty legit especially with the website to back up his claims. What do you think am I a fool or did i do the right thing??? Good luck on the ice ><///////;>

I would never give any personal information or credit card information out to anyone over the phone in a situation like this. IMO, you did the correct thing. That company should know better than to be doing this if it was really legit.
mojogunterPosts: 3303December 9, 2009 at 2:15 am #821676I would feel pretty good about your decision. Did you sign up to win a trip at the show? If the same thing happened to me I would tell them I will drive over and meet them in person to pay the tax.
December 9, 2009 at 2:16 am #821677You did the right thing in my opinion…
Did you register for this trip ?
Did you sign up for anything that would give your info up ?I’ll bet there are a pile of places that you can sign up for information and then your info gets sold to whoever thinks they can make a profit off of it…
Take IDO for instance…
You e-mail address is totally safe here…there is no way that it will get sold for a profit at all !!! (Thanks James!!!)
A long time back I must have signed up for something…I’m talking years ago and they are still calling me telling me I have unused credits at some 5 star place in Sunny Florida…funny…they never call me in the summer
mojogunterPosts: 3303December 9, 2009 at 2:24 am #821680I did a quick search and there are a lot of people that fell for it. You made the right decision.
December 9, 2009 at 2:28 am #821684I had an ex-girlfriend fall for this a few years ago. She gave them her CC# and they charged $500 or something. It’s basically a vacation package that they sell you. It took quite a bit of work to get the money back.
December 9, 2009 at 2:50 am #821699I did sign up for a few things at the show but not sure if one was for this type of vacation or not. The website they provided Amazontravelclub.com was pretty convincing however I do think this thing was a scam. I have an 800 number from the guy I will call during business hours tomorrow to try and figure this out. Thanks for your vote of confidence! If anyone else got the same call please share your thoughts. thanks men.
December 9, 2009 at 3:48 am #821728I got the same call after last years show. I also decided against giving my info. Good choice.
December 9, 2009 at 3:59 am #821731I won a trip through KFAN this year. When they called me they completely understood that I was suspicious. They did not ask for anything over the phone, sent me a contract, a local phone number and address and offered that I come down to the station.
I ended up confirming the PR guy through their website and I never had to pay them anything. I’m sure I’ll owe tax on the value of the prize but that I pay to Uncle Sam.

December 16, 2014 at 5:12 am #1484462You did the right thing. Put yourself in the shoes of a company wanting to do a marketing campaign where you give away a trip. You think they are going to do anything suspicious sounding that a winner might be leery of like asking for credit card info? The whole purpose of a sweepstakes is to get people thinking about your product by entering and getting good publicity by the winner having a pleasant experience.
Also, there are no ports in Orlando.
December 16, 2014 at 6:36 am #1484490On a different but related topic…
On game shows where a contestant win a trip package, the package is free but seldom are the taxes paid for. This way the vacation resort, airlines, cruise lines ect get advertising but folks seldom take advantage of the trips.
December 16, 2014 at 10:56 am #1484594I’m going to use the money I get from that Nigerian prince to pay for the free Orlando vacation.

I always say when I see people win cash and prizes that they’ll be lucky to see half of it.
