4WD here any time there is snow on the road!
The extra cost of gas is worth the extra control and safety. Don’t give us insurance guys any reasons to charge more.
You insurance guys have never needed a reason to charge more.

That is only for the trucks at 8600 GVWR and less.

Regardless of which trucks do/don’t have it, I know mine has it, and I love the Auto 4×4 on “iffy” days. Days like today got the all-time dedicated 4×4 treatment.
My roads this am were never plowed all night/all am. (live in the country). I had a solid 16″ of snow cover, plus 2-3’+ drifts all over the place. Luckily the snow was very, very light, or else I would never have made it in. Also was lucky for some brave truck driving soul to blaze a path shortly before I left the house, although it was mostly drifted over already by the time I left.
December 9, 2009 at 5:35 pm #821938I wish I had the choice… I’m stuck with sandbags for my 4X4… Had to drive all over Ames, IA last night before getting home. All was good until I got to my apartment parking lot which had 3-5ft drifts and I got stuck for the first time in 4 years of owning this truck…
About 5 min before I got out of my truck and helped push some girl out of the snow, when I got stuck two people helped push me out, talk about pay it forward! Have to love Midwestern people!

That is all I do with my Tahoe. I figure no extra wear and tear when I don’t need it.
I’m sure I use more gas in the snow because I like to feel it kick in and go like a bat out of #ell from a dead stop.

4×4 Auto
December 10, 2009 at 6:28 pm #822317Nope just 2 wheel, I have never owned a 4×4. When we get a lot of snow I just slow down and maintain control. A couple years ago is the only time I got stuck and that was my fault I should have had new tires put on before the 12″ of show we got that night. And I should have waited for someone else to blaze the trail instead of me being the first out on my road that morning.
December 10, 2009 at 6:34 pm #822320I never use my 4 wheel drive unless I’m in the woods or on a lake an actually need it. If you get into trouble on the road with a rear wheel or front wheel you can correct the problem and recover while steering into or out of your slide (depending on rear wheel vs. front wheel drive).
If all 4 wheels are spinning under power you cannot correct. Four wheel drive is a false sense of security on the highway and I would prefer people with false sense of security not be over driving the conditions while I’m out on the roads.
Good snow/ice tires with good tread are much more valuable than 4 wheel drive.
FYI: I drive a 2001 Chevy 1500HD with All-Terrain T/A® KO. I love them for their snow traction.
December 10, 2009 at 7:18 pm #822337If the road is completely slippery from ice or snow you bet I use 4×4. Why in the world would I own it otherwise? The 3 times per year I need it not to get stuck?? And of those 3 times I could have avoided all of them.
If its intermittent slippery like the roads in town yesterday and today I love the Auto 4×4 featuer on my GM vehicle. I cant imagine why people dont use it when it gives such vastly superior grip to the road. A rear-wheel drive truck is the absolute unstablest vehicle there is to begin with on slippery road. All of the above goes double when I am trailering on slippery road.

Your statement makes absolutely no sense to me and I would argue it to be 100% false. I would be glad to show you the impressive stability of a truck in 4×4 on some parking lot. Pick the lot.

Its not the greatest system but it sure is handy. The system on my wife’s AWD Jeep is way better. You can barely sense the rear spin before hookup. Sometimes you cant.
December 10, 2009 at 7:27 pm #822345I don’t disagree that 4X4 does in fact provide more traction control vs. 2 wheel drive. However I’ve seen way to many people put their SUV into 4 wheel and think they are bullet proof.
With that being said, I’d rather have those ill informed drivers be scared and driving defensively in 2 wheel drive.
December 10, 2009 at 7:34 pm #822350I think I see your point. Morons will be morons. I seen my fair share on slippery roads. However in capable hands 4×4 is a marvelous tool. I just got home from Atlanta last night so I missed the storm. I have been driving around ever since cause it’s so much fun to me.

Not sure how it is unstable. When it gets slippery out, the wheels spin, let off the gas and slow down. There isn’t any control issue, you just need to pay attention to the road conditions and your driving.
