4X4, Do You or, Don’t You?

Monroe and La Crosse Counties have been doing a great job keeping the lanes visible in this dump of snow and winds we are receiving right now Great job getting everyone home for sure but, someone will complain I’m sure when they call it quits for awhile Anyways……..

So HWY 16 is snow packed, the squeaky kind of snow! Do you put it in 4 wheel drive and say “heck with the gas” for that confident feeling? As long as there isn’t dry spots on a HWY, I do. With this said, yes, I also remember I have to get stopped

How many run 4 wheels for HWY miles, other than the drifting conditions that will happen later tonight making it a must?

I’ll pay for the gas to save an accident!

It is a pet peve of mine in traffic when a guy with a 4×4 can’t get going at a stop light or sign. I know you say highway but I will add city or suburb driving.

I run in 4 wheel in poor conditions. I especially use it if there is traffic. If I’m up North in bad weather and no one else is out, I typically keep it in rear wheel. I like the slippy sliddy feeling.

I do it all the time when there is enough ice/snow to justify it.Had to run 200 miles once in conditions like we have tonight. Those occasional dry spots get interesting though so one does not want to get over confident. And never use the cruise.

I usually get off and take back roads from Hudson to Menomonie. I would rather drive in 12 inches of snow on a county road in 4 wheel drive than be on the interstate where the “fast guy” has to pass everyone and put himself and or others in danger. At least if I go in the ditch on the county road I have no one to blame but myself. God I sound like my dad.

I never run in 4wd down the highway, I’d rather know when it gets slippery by having some wheelspin and slow down. I could care less about the mileage, it already has a bigblock in it.

2wd is for driving down the and playing. 4wd is to get me out of the ditch after I’ve played to much!!!
Really 4wd auto for my burban especially in trafic. More than anything else, extra space and plan ahead before stopping. If all else fail, hard on the brakes and reverse.

Nothing like knowing you’ll get in further and deeper. 4×4 in the sloppy stuff

4X4 in slippery conditions especially if there is traffic around like this morning on my way to school i sliding so i put it in 4wheel to make sure i didnt get in an accident. i like to slip and slid sometimes too.

4WD here any time there is snow on the road!

The extra cost of gas is worth the extra control and safety. Don’t give us insurance guys any reasons to charge more.

4X4 when the roads are not clear of snow and ice. I don’t drive any faster when in 4 wheel drive and actually slow down. It’s a safety issue so I could care less about the mpg. And it is one of the reasons I have 4×4 so I use it.

It is so easy to switch between 4X4 and 2X that I will switch back and forth as needed. Any doubt and the 4X4 is on.

Push button 4×4, I always use it when the roads get a little slimy. Better safe than sorry.

X3… although the new 2010 has ESP… can’t even get a decent slip slide going in 2 wheel…

Mostly 2 wheel, but will run 4 wheel on the highway on the nights that they pull the plows off the road because it’s snowing too hard.

One other thing. If I’m going to be going up a steep hill and know the transmission is likely to shift out of overdrive, I’ll either shift into “D” or put it in 4×4 so that the back end doesn’t step out from the surge of power to the rear tires, though that’s probably not a problem with Fords.

Everyone have a safe next couple of days.

    Dan

P.S. Especially with pickups, if you keep your gas tank above 1/2 full the truck will be a lot less “twitchy” in 2 wheel drive.

If my wheels slip once shes locked in. Drove to CAbelas in Owantona once from NW Iowa 4×4 all the way, 90 was 1 crappy lane on the trip up.

I ran in 4×4 for the better share of my 32 mile commute tonight. Gas is cheap compared to an insurance claim.

My Navigator has this. 2WD has traction control then 4Hi, 4lo, then AWD and forget it! 2 WD til she slips and she locks in. You gotta work at getting this rig into trouble!

With a rear wheel drive SUV I use mine quite a bit in conditions like last night. I don’t like it when the rear wheels try to come around and take over for the front wheels. This morning with these conditions it will definatley be in 4 wheel drive – if I decide to go in it’s just a push button away – that’s what it’s there for.

4WD when it’s slick. My Sequoia has traction control and vehicle skid control which really makes it a pain to take off from a stop in 2WD. Once the roads get cleared, I put it back in 2WD, though. Easy enough to push a button.

When ever the roads have snow on them I use it. Days like today it should be a law that you have to have to leave the house.

Same here last night and this morning. Funny there was not much traffic today at 5-am
